WESTFIELD — A pair of invitational meets are in the record books so far this season, and the Patriots have finished in the top two each time.
The Jay County High School girls swim team was the runner-up Saturday in the Kristin Rice Westfield Invitational
The host Shamrocks won the team championship with 628 points. The Patriots, who won the Norwell Invitational on Nov. 11, scored 497 for second, and Yorktown was third with 458.
Senior Alex Bader had a hand in all three race wins for JCHS. She was first in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.14 seconds and followed that up with a time of 1 minute, 9.32 seconds, to win the 100 breaststroke.
She joined Ashlyn Dow, Vivienne Kunkler and her sister Eliza to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.21.
Elizabeth McDowell, Dow and the Baders were second in the 200 medley relay, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Rieley Brewster, Erica Hathaway, McDowell and Kunkler was also second.
Individuals finishing in the top eight for the Patriots were Eliza Bader (third – 100 butterfly, fourth – 100 backstroke), Mackenzie Knisely (sixth – diving), Jenna Dunfee (eighth – 200 freestyle), Lilly Clemmons (eighth – 100 backstroke), Hannah James (eighth – 100 breaststroke), Kunkler (second – 100 breaststroke), Hathaway (fourth – 200 freestyle, fourth – 500 freestyle), Brewster (fifth – 500 freestyle, fifth – 100 backstroke), Dow (fifth – 100 freestyle) and McDowell (sixth – 100 freestyle).
Stars win again
BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team won its second consecutive game Saturday, defeating the Union City Indians 44-38.
The Starfires (2-1) jumped out to an 11-7 lead after eight minutes and pushed the advantage to 25-19 at half. After three quarters of play South Adams was out front 38-27 before the Indians (2-3) kept it close in the final eight minutes with a 10-6 advantage in scoring.
Lexi Dellinger had three baskets from beyond the arc on her way to a game-high 15 points. Madi Wurster did all of her damage inside as she finished with 10 points. Lydia Loshe contributed seven points while Sydney Pierce chipped in six.
South Adams’ junior varsity team lost, 48-46.
Loshe led the JV stars with 13 points, followed by Taylor Augsburger’s 11 points. Kelsa Ortiz was third on the team with six points.
Sets season best
LAFAYETTE — Hannah Outcalt set a season best score Sunday during the It’s All Groovy Gymnastics Invitational at Lafayette Sports Center.
The Jay County High School freshman, who competes in the 13-and-older Xcel Gold division, scored a 9.1 on uneven bars for her highest score of the season on the event. She was fourth.
Her next highest score was 9.05 on floor exercise, which was sixth place. Despite a fall on the balance beam, her 8.825 was good enough for third place. Outcalt added an 8.45 on vault to finish with a seventh-place all-around total of 35.425.
