Shirley Butcher

Shirley Butcher, age 80, Portland, passed away Thursday evening at her daughter's residence in Fort Wayne. She was born in Pennsylvania on Dec. 12, 1936, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Shannon) Long. She was married Dec. 7, 1956, to Don Butcher and he passed away April 2, 1999. She was a homemaker and member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a volunteer for Pregnancy Care Center and Food Bank and a Fort Recovery High School graduate.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Butcher of Thornville, Ohio, and Chris Butcher (wife: Sherry) of Portland; one daughter, Lori Minnich (husband: John) of Fort Wayne; one brother, Richard Long of Centerville; six sisters, Kathleen Schmidt of Greenville, Ohio, Betty Imel of Portland, Joan Banta of Chicago and Rita Long, Pat Vantrees and Peg Long, all of Fort Recovery; six grandchildren, Miranda Mertz, Adam Butcher, Sarah Manor, Matthew Manor, Stephanie Meyer and Angela Taylor; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Long, a sister, Mary Niekamp, and three great-grandsons Uriyah, Christopher and Alex.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Moran presiding. Burial will follow in Wells Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home and Tuesday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Memorials can be made to PAWS of Adams County (animal shelter) or Pregnancy Care Center of Portland.
