FORT WAYNE — After one quarter, the Patriots were ahead.
The same was true at halftime.
But against the Class 4A No. 5 Spartans, they could not sustain the lead.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team had its offense go cold in the final 16 minutes Tuesday in a 63-49 loss to host Homestead.
The Patriots (3-3) were ahead 15-14 after one quarter and 35-30 at the half thanks to 16 points from senior Hanna Ault. But defending Class 4A state champion Homestead outscored Jay County 18-11 in the third quarter and 15-4 in the fourth.
Ault finished with 18 points to lead the Patriots, and Shelby Caldwell was second with 12 points while leading the team with nine rebounds. Hanna Dillon contributed seven points.
Jay County’s junior varsity squad fell 51-34. Aubrie Schweiterman scored 10 points to lead Jay County and Pacie Denney was close behind with nine.
Patriots, Tigers split
The Jay County swim teams split with the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
The JCHS girls won 186-104, and the boys lost 174-117.
Sisters Alex and Eliza Bader were both dual winners for the Patriot girls. Eliza was first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while Alex claimed the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle races. Also getting individual victories were Lilly Clemmons (50 freestyle), Ashlyn Dow (100 breaststroke), Mackenzie Knisely (diving), Erica Hathaway (100 backstroke) and Elizabeth McDowell (100 butterfly).
Vivienne Kunkler, McDowell and the Baders combined to win the 200 medley relay. Alex Bader, Kunkler, Hathaway and Dow teamed for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay, while Eliza Bader, Hathaway, Dow and McDowell were first in the 400 freestyle relay.
Garrett Campbell was the lone JCHS boy to win a pair of events in claiming the top spot in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Tayler Smeltzer also had an individual win in the 100 butterfly.
The boys’ 200 freestyle relay team of Skyler Myers, Alex LeMaster, Smeltzer and Campbell were also victorious.
Senior hits milestone
ANSONIA, Ohio — Lexi Dellinger scored her 1,000th career point Tuesday while leading the South Adams girls basketball team to a 70-34 win over the Ansonia Tigers.
South Adams (5-1) jumped out to an 18-6 advantage after the first quarter and led 41-16 at halftime. The Starfires doubled up the Tigers (0-1) in the third period with a 16-8 margin, and kept the lead in the final eight minutes.

Eagle girls split
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams split at home with the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth grade squad lost 28-21, while the seventh graders picked up a 19-5 win.
Isabel Rodgers poured in 19 points in the loss for the WJMS eighth graders, and Lizzie Dollar contributed the other two points.
Abbie Fields scored five points to lead a balanced seventh grade effort. Grace Shimp and Gabby Bilbrey had four points each, while Taylor Brown, Alizabeth Stotler and Paige Mumbower finished with two points apiece.
On Monday, the Eagle seventh graders lost at Woodlan, 24-20. Shimp led the way with eight points, Fields scored six points and Bilbrey added four points.
WJ boys lose
BLUFFTON — The West Jay boys basketball teams both lost to the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth grade team dropped a heartbreaker, 25-24, and the seventh graders fell 34-14.
Quinn Faulkner’s 10 points were a team high for the eighth grade squad. Nick Street contributed six points, Camden Harrison finished with five points, Kess McBride had two points and Trenton Alexander chipped in one point.
Spencer Caldwell scored seven points to lead the seventh grade Chiefs (2-4). Gabe Goodspeed was second with four points, Landon Lowe scored two points and Dominick Newsome had one point.
FR girls drop opener
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both dropped their season opener on Tuesday with losses to Coldwater.
The eighth grade team fell 38-32, and the seventh graders lost 29-14.
Faith Grube tallied eight points to lead the FRMS eighth grade team, which got six points apiece from Marissa Gaerke and Chloey Grisez. Lilie Leuthold contributed five points, while Madelyn Knapke, Grace Guggenbiller and Olivia Hawk all had two points.
Elizabeth Alig’s four points were a team high for the seventh graders. Audra Bubp, Madison Guggenbiller, Abby Knapke, Alaina Will and Lindsey Wendel had two points apiece.
The South Adams junior varsity team also won, 53-40. Madi Smith’s 14 points were a team high, and Emilee Myers was second with a dozen points. Gabi Bailey and Loshe finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
