The Patriots bounced back from a heartbreaking loss Thursday by winning its tournament Saturday.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team went a perfect 3-0 to win as host of the Patriot Invitational.
Jay County (16-8), which lost in four sets to Heritage for the Allen County Athletic Conference regular-season championship Thursday, defeated Carroll (Flora) 25-17, 24-26, 17-15, before wins against Frankton (25-14, 25-14) and Union City (25-9, 25-15).
Kaelyn Weaver notched 42 kills over the three matches. Olivia Kunkler was second with 12 kills while Natalie Miles and Alana Kunkler notched eight kills apiece.
Kailee Denney had team highs in assists (61) and aces (10). Chloe Trissel had 24 digs while Kendal Garringer and Randi Ferguson each had 21 digs.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also took the title with wins against Marion (25-21, 25-21), Frankton (26-24, 25-19) and Union City (25-19, 25-19).
Hallie Fields had 14 kills, and Sara Hemmelgarn was second with 13. Fields also had 24 digs while Macie Weitzel notched four aces.
Tribe sweeps ’Skins
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery volleyball team kept its non-conference record perfect Saturday with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 sweep of the Fort Loramie Redskins at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
Carley Stone paced the FRHS offense with 14 kills. She also had 11 digs and a pair of blocks. Paige Jutte was second on the team with seven kills to go with her four digs and pair of blocks.
Cassy Martin notched a team-high five blocks, eight digs and four kills. Brooke Gaerke totaled three kills and three blocks.
Kiah Wendel’s 19 digs were tops on the team, and Madi Rammel had 27 assists as the Division IV No. 5 Indians moved to 15-2.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team won 25-17, 23-25, 25-14.
Chloe Showalter’s 14 digs and 11 kills were tops on the team.
Rachel Acheson had 16 assists and Hope Wendel had 11 assists. Val Muhlenkamp helped control the net defensively with four blocks.
Stars 4th at invite
CONVOY, Ohio — The South Adams volleyball team went 1-2 Saturday to finish fourth at the Crestview Invitational.
The Starfires (17-9) defeated Arlington, which finished 13th in the most recent OHSAA Division IV poll, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19. South Adams then lost to a pair of state-ranked teams — Division III No. 9 Ottawa-Glandorf (25-17, 25-14) and Division IV No. 8 Marion Local (25-23, 27-25).
Madi Wurster totaled 33 kills, including a 14-kill effort against Marion Local. She also had six blocks and 23 digs.
Addie Wanner notched 11 kills. Hannah Dull led the defense with 30 digs, and Julia Grabau tallied 43 assists.
Patriots end with win
A first-half goal stood as the Jay County boys soccer team beat the Oak Hill Golden Eagles on Saturday, 1-0.
It was the third consecutive victory for the Patriots (6-6-3), who open sectional play against the Yorktown Tigers at 7 p.m. Tuesday at New Castle.
The Patriots and Golden Eagles weren’t able to break through in the first 20 minutes, but junior Daniel Fugiett was able to get free on the right side and sent a shot to the left side of the goal for the lone score of the game.
Jay County’s defense played tight the rest of the way in making Fugiett’s goal stand as the game winner.
Chiefs 1-2 at tourney
East Jay Middle Schools’ seventh grade volleyball team was 1-2 in the invitational it hosted.
The Chiefs lost to South Adams (25-14, 25-22) and West Jay (16-25, 25-16, 15-5) before defeating Bluffton (25-12, 25-14).
Laci McGinnis led the team in service points (11), aces (nine) and kills (five). Morgan Reier had 11 digs to go with her five points and two aces, while Lauren Brewster chipped in six digs, six points and three aces. Gracie Barnett contributed five points.
West Jay and South Adams stats were not provided.
