Shirley Herrin

Shirley Sutton Herrin, age 83, a resident of Portland, passed away on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
Shirley was born on Nov. 8, 1933, in Jay County, the daughter of Everett and Carrie (Rees) Sutton. She graduated from Dunkirk High School and was married on June 15, 1952, to John Herrin who passed away in 1994. She was a homemaker most of her life and worked for the Jay School Corporation as an instructional aid helping kids with reading. She was a member of the Plymouth United Church of Christ in Dunkirk. She actively attended the Trinity United Methodist Church in Portland where she taught Sunday School and played piano.
Other memberships include: Portland Evening Optimist Club, Silver Sneakers at the Jay Community Center and Jay County Republican Women. Shirley volunteered for many organizations including the Jay County Hospital auxiliary, American Red Cross where she helped with local blood drives and the Jay County Public Library where she helped during book sales. Shirley was an avid reader of mystery books and enjoyed playing the piano. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and many friends. She was a faithful cheerleader for her grandkids’ numerous events and activities and the life of every party.
Survivors include:
One daughter: Carolyn Johnson (husband: Doug), Portland, Indiana
Four grandchildren: Alyssa Ralston (husband: Robert), Amanda Schortgen (husband: James), Patrick Johnson (wife: Joni) and Abigail Scott (husband: Darren)
Two great-grandsons: Max Robert and Hunter Rees Ralston
She was preceded in death by her husband John Herrin; three children, Linda Susan Herrin, Elizabeth Ann Herrin and Jayne Kathryn Herrin; and two sisters, Janice Sutton and Marianna Kirkham.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Westchester United Methodist Church, 4487 E. 400 North, Portland. Funeral services will follow at noon Tuesday at the church. Pastor Darrell Borders will officiate and burial will follow in the Dunkirk IOOF Cemetery.
