Fort Recovery junior qualifies for state

TIFFIN, Ohio — For the first time in four years, an Indian runner is going to state.

Chloe Will, a Fort Recovery High School junior, qualified for the OHSAA cross country state finals by finishing 19th in the Division III regional on Saturday at Tiffin High School.

The top four teams and individuals finishing in the top 32 advance to the state finals, which is Saturday at National Trail Raceway.

Will, who has been the top Tribe runner all year, had a time of 20 minutes, 2.69 seconds, to lead Fort Recovery, which scored 365 points to finish 15th.

Defending state champion Minster won the regional title with 40 points. Pettisville was the runner-up with 136 points, four ahead of Columbus Grove. St. Henry scored 166 to finish fourth.

Will is the first FRHS runner to reach state since 2014 graduate Elle Sutter, who now runs for Ohio Northern.

Freshmen were the second through fourth runners for the Indians. Anna Wendel was 71st in 21:17.02, while Hanna Metzger was 90th in 21:32.49 and Kendra Metzger crossed the finish line in 22:52.94 for 155th. Junior Elise Gehle had a time of 23:00.06 for 164th.

Audrey Guggenbiller (190th – 24:00.62) and Sarah Siefring (191st – 24:01.27) also competed for the FRHS girls.

Sophomore Drew Muhlenkamp, the lone FRHS boy to reach regional, was 155th in 19:08.3.



Four in a row

COLUMBUS — The Fort Recovery High School football team is in the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.

The Indians (6-4), who knocked off No. 10 St. Henry 28-16 Friday, earned the No. 7 seed in Division VI Region 24, and will open the playoffs against No. 2 seed Marion Local (10-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Maria Stein. The Flyers are defending Division VI state champions.

The winner advances to the regional semifinal against either No. 3 seed Spencerville (8-2) or No. 6 Mechanicsburg (8-2) on Nov. 10.

Other quarterfinal games pit top-seeded Lima Central Catholic (9-1) against Dayton Christian (9-1) and No. 4 Coldwater (7-3) versus No. 5 Bethel (9-1).

Regional semifinal and championship games will be on neutral sites, and the regional final is slated for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17.

Fort Recovery has played in the regional final in each of the last two seasons, including winning the state title in 2015.



Outcalt fourth

LAFAYETTE — Hannah Outcalt, a Jay County High School freshman, finished fourth in two events Saturday during the Graveyard Smash Gymnastics Invitational at Jefferson High School.

Her highest score of the meet came on the floor exercise, as she scored 9.15 to place fourth. On uneven bars, she totaled 9.05 points, her best score in more than two years, to also finish fourth.

Outcalt, who was competing in the 13-and-older Xcel Gold division, was sixth on vault with 8.6 and seventh on balance beam (8.275).

Her all-around score of 35.075 was fifth.
