The Patriot offense was too fast.
So too was the defense.
No matter where the ball was on the field, a Patriot was a step ahead of a Knight.
Lucy Laux added two more goals and the defense kept the pressure off of its goalkeeper as the Jay County High School girls soccer team defeated the Norwell Knights on Thursday, 4-1.
“It’s a solid team, Norwell,” said JCHS coach Giles Laux, whose team has pushed its season-opening winning streak to seven games. “Well coached, well disciplined. They have a lot of players. They are always tenacious and tough to beat.”
Thursday, however, the Patriots (7-0) were by far the better team in every aspect. Its offense outran the Knight defense. Jay County’s back four limited Norwell’s chances, as goalkeeper Shelby Caldwell only faced five shots on goal.
“We have a veteran team,” Laux added. “We have strong leadership. Our offense is experienced and our defense is still doing the job.”
Lucy Laux, who entered the game with a team-best 15 goals on the season, put the Patriots on the board 21 minutes, 53 seconds, into the contest. She beat the Norwell defense on a 50/50 ball in the JCHS offensive third, and sent a shot toward the left side of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
She got her second goal of the game with less than 2 minutes to play in the contest, again beating the Norwell defense on a free ball. From about 15 yards out she sent a right-footed shot to the right side of the net.
“They are well-earned goals because she definitely gets harassed in the goal,” Giles Laux said. “She know’s she’s going to.”
Fellow forwards Kendra Muhlenkamp and Breea Liette were also roughed up at times, much to the dismay of the fourth-year JCHS coach.
“Kendra knows she’s going to (face contact) and Breea gets her share of licks against her,” he said, “They are tough girls though. Fast, tough and they don’t give up.”
Jay County’s defense, led by senior Briana Muhlenkamp, was stellar yet again. The middle back defender thwarted many offensive chances for the Knights, that is if they weren’t whistled for being offsides first.
Muhlenkamp and a rotation of Sydnee Lee, Allison Jobe, Eliza Bader and Karlie Bullard kept Caldwell’s work to a minimum.
Norwell’s only tally came about midway through the second half on a penalty kick. Bader, a JCHS freshman, was whistled for a foul on Norwell senior Cecelya Archbold in the right side of the 18-yard box, and Archbold buried her ensuing penalty kick.
Caldwell, a junior, went to her left and got her hand on Archbold’s shot, but wasn’t able to deflect it cleanly.
“They weren’t scored on,” Laux said of his defense. The Patriots have allowed 11 total goals in seven games. “They got a PK so the defense wasn’t scored on.
“Briana Muhlenkamp, can’t say enough about her.”
Jay County’s had no issue in keeping the Knights (0-6) at bay, if the ball got that far in the first place. The Patriot midfield of Alex Bader, Hannah Phillips, Anhely Montes and Mikele Suman often beat the Knights to balls in the middle third of the field, and sent passes up to the forwards to get chances.
“We were working on all cylinders,” Laux said. “This was not the same team that (defeated) South Adams this week. We just, from top to bottom, are playing solid ball.”
Montes tallied her third goal of the season late in the first half. Kendra Muhlenkamp — she found the back of the net for the 14th time this year midway through the second half — had the ball deep in the left corner, and passed it toward the top of the box to Alex Bader. The senior midfielder then sent it to Phillips, who touched it back to Montes for a 2-0 lead as the eventual game-winning goal.
“Beautiful shot,” Laux said. Montes fired a left-footer to the left side of the net. “Teamwork. Unselfish play. These girls want to win, bottom line.”
Junior varsity
Anhely Montes did her best Lucy Laux impression, scoring both goals for Jay County in a 2-0 victory over Norwell.
Montes notched her first tally unassisted, and Mikele Suman was credited with a helper on her second.
Junior goalkeeper Gwen Omstead made three saves.
