A new gas station and convenience store is opening next week in Geneva.
Casey’s General Store, located at 725 W. Main St., will open at 5 a.m. Friday, with store hours from 5 a.m. to midnight each day. The store will also have grand opening events on Sept. 15 and 16.
Ralph Russell, district supervisor for the store, said the publicly owned chain of convenience stores is especially known for one thing: pizza.
“We are famous for pizza, our pizzas are awesome,” Russell said. “We make the dough from scratch every day … we hand cut our vegetables and stuff fresh every day, not frozen veggies or anything. Frozen and bagged is not our thing.”
Along with the pizza, the store offers a full line of subs, cheeseburgers, wings and pork tenderloins. Casey’s will also have the typical convenience store fare, including frozen drinks, coffee and prepackaged snacks.
Other amenities include gas station pumps for semi trucks and a hitching post for horses.
Between now and the store’s opening date, Russell said he and the employees are working hard to get it set up. On Thursday, about a dozen employees were installing shelves, running through training sessions or working on getting the gas pumps running.
As time goes on, Russell said he is open to tweaking some things in the Geneva store’s business model. For instance, if there’s enough demand he may open the store 24 hours a day and start pizza delivery.
But for now, he’s focusing on getting involved in the local community, which he said is a primary focus of Casey’s stores throughout the country.
“Of our 2000 stores, maybe 70 percent or so are in communities of 5,000 people or less. That’s our niche, small town America,” said Russell, who currently supervises five stores, with three more planned to open this year. “We really try hard to become a part of the community, we do a lot with local school systems … we just really try to partner with the community and become an integrated part of it.”
