Two of the Patriots three singles players cruised to wins.

It helped the team get their second victory of the season.

The Jay County High School boys tennis team hosted sectional rival Randolph Southern on Tuesday and swept the Rebels, 5-0.

At No. 1 singles, JCHS senior Garrett Rodgers defeated RSHS sophomore Josh Good 6-0, 6-0. Conner Benter, the Patriots’ No. 3 singles player, defeated Jimmy Ashbaugh 6-1, 6-0.

Payton Heniser had to work a little for his 6-1, 6-3 win over Kyle Allen at No. 2 singles.

Ethan Myers and Xavier Ninde, a senior and junior respectively, combined to win their No. 1 doubles match over Tyler Pegg and Devin Guthrie 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall teamed for a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tyler Knots and Tyler Hoquin 6-2, 6-1, to complete the sweep.

In the only junior varsity match, Jay County’s Mitchell Ferguson triumphed over Ethan Key 8-1. Jay County moved to 2-5 on the year, and opens Allen County Athletic Conference play on Thursday at Bluffton. 



Fugiett seventh

CONVERSE — Sophia Fugiett added another top-10 finish on Tuesday as the Jay County girls cross country team finished seventh in the Oak Hill Invitational.

The hosts won the team title with 23 points. Carroll (Flora) was second with 90 points and Tipton scored 99 for third. Jay County had 157 points, finishing seventh behind Alexandria because of a sixth-runner tiebreaker.

Oak Hill also won the boys race, totaling 27 points. Mississinawa (110) and Peru (126) were second and third respectively. Jay County totaled 155 points for eighth.

Fugiett was seventh overall with her time of 21 minutes, 24.1 seconds. Lita Chowning finished 37th in 26:12, Miranda Alig was three spots behind in 26:19, and Ella Roessner was 56th in 29:26. Catherine Stafford finished 60th in 31:12 as the Patriots’ No. 5 runner. 

Skyler Myers was the top JCHS boy as he finished 20th in 19:12. Mitchell Winner (20:21) and Tayler Smeltzer (20:25) were 29th and 31st respectively. Mason Winner placed 45th in 21:44.



Golfers third

MUNCIE — Jay County’s girls golf team finished in third place Tuesday in a three-team match with the host Yorktown Tigers and Wes-Del Warriors at Muncie Elks Country Club.

The host Tigers shot 202 to win. Wes-Del was runner up with 224, and Jay County totaled 238 for third.

Mackenzie Parks had the best score for Jay County as she finished with 53. Madalyn Garringer and Eden Basford both shot identical scores of 60, and Gabi Paxson completed the team score with 65.

Sierra Caster also competed but did not factor into the team score. She finished with 69.



SA opens with win

PONETO — The South Adams volleyball team opened Allen County Athletic Conference play on Tuesday by sweeping the host Southern Wells Raiders.

The Starfires (9-3, 1-0 ACAC) defeated the Raiders 25-14, 25-10, 25-10.

Madi Wurster racked up 22 kills in leading South Adams. She also had a pair of blocks and two aces. Addie Wanner and Jade Farlow contributed five and three kills respectively. Wanner also chipped in three aces and three digs. Lydia Loshe posted a team-best seven digs while Julia Grabau totaled 28 assists.

South Adams’ junior varsity team also won, 25-11, 25-17.

Katelyn Hamrick had three kills and a block, and Hannah Beitler totaled three aces and two kills. Josie Grabau’s eight assists and three aces were tops on the team.



SA drops opener

MONROE — South Adams’ boys tennis team dropped its Allen County Athletic Conference opener to Adams Central on Tuesday, 5-0.

David Muselman had the only competitive match of the evening, as he lost at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3, to Jaxon Rinkenberger.

Cam Stevens and Wes Stout both lost at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively. Stevens fell to Cam Burkhart 6-0, 6-0, and Stout fell to Adam Busse by the same score.

South Adams’ No. 1 doubles team of James Fosnaugh and Brayden Gilbert lost to Kyle Arnold and Lucas Harvey 6-0, 6-2, while Paul Stuckey and Travis Clingenpeel fell to Kade Moser and Dylan Hurst at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.



Patriots hang on

LAPEL — Jay County’s junior varsity football team staved off a late rally for a 22-20 victory over the Lapel Bulldogs on Tuesday.

The Patriots (1-2) led 16-8 at half, and 22-20 heading into the fourth quarter. Late in the final period with the Bulldogs driving, Sheldon Eley had an interception to seal the win.

Bailey Cox had two rushing touchdowns, one of 70 yards and another from 3 yards away. Elijah Corwin also had TD on a 20-yard pass from Landon Grimes, who threw two-point conversion passes to both Corwin and Eley.



FR sweeps Cavs

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team swept the Coldwater Cavaliers on Tuesday, 25-12, 25-18.

Hope Wendel led Fort Recovery with seven kills. Maria Hartings and Kendra Dues had three kills apiece, and Kyra Clark chipped in two kills. Ashlyn Bechtol and Hartings totaled three aces apiece, and Ava Bubp totaled a dozen assists. Brenna Homan led the defense with 15 digs and Bubp added 11.
