Swiss Heritage Festival is Saturday
Taking Note
The annual Swiss Heritage Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Swiss Heritage Village & Museum in Berne.
Artisans will demonstrate how settlers in the 1800s made rope, cut logs, washed clothes, quilted blankets, shelled corn with a hand crank sheller, churned butter, spun wool, sawed wood and made apple butter.
There will also be pioneer activities, sawmill demonstrations, a Civil War camp and children’s games and activities.
Entertainment will include cheese making at 10 a.m.; Harmony String Band at 10:30 a.m.; Jay Community Band at 11:30 a.m.; Bernish Band at 1:45 p.m.; Francie Bond at 2:45 p.m.; and The Big Squeeze cider press in action at 3:45 p.m.
Food will be available, including homemade soup cooked over a fire and kettle corn.
Admission is $1 for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and $3 for adults.
Twilight adventure
An event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve in Geneva to enjoy fall wildflowers and learn about the creatures that roam the Limberlost.
Visitors will see a wildlife program at the Loblolly Pavilion and get to guess what’s in a mystery box, try out bionic ears, use night vision equipment, create an animal craft and sit around a campfire and roast marshmallows.
Limberlost naturalists will lead a twilight hike after sunset.
The cost is $3 for children and $4 for adults. The Loblolly Marsh is located at 8323 N. 250 West, a half-mile north of Indiana 18 and 3.5 miles west of Bryant.

Director search
Jay County Civic Theatre is in search of a director and music director for its upcoming production of “Miracle on 34th Street.”
The play will run Dec. 14 through 17 at Arts Place in Portland.
Those interested should send a resume that includes previous directorial experience, a list of the last four shows involved in and three references to [email protected].

Poetry contest
The Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana State Library are teaming to invite Indiana high schools to participate in the 2018 Poetry Out Loud competition.
The program encourages the study of great poetry by offeringeducation materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high school students across the country.
More information can be found on the Indiana State Library’s Poetry Out Loud website and the deadline for schools to sign-up is Nov. 30.
Competitions will be held at the high school level to choose one student to represent the school in the state final competition on Feb. 17, 2018, at the Indiana State Library.
The state champion will receive a $200 cash prize and a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Poetry Out Loud Nationals Finals in April.
