MUNCIE — Josh Dowlen and Quinn Faulkner provided the offense.
Their respective defenses kept the Panthers at bay.
The Jay County middle school football teams both moved to 2-0 on Thursday by blasting the Muncie Southside Panthers.
The seventh grade squad pitched a 36-0 shutout, and the eighth graders won 30-6.
Dowlen had 120 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns for the seventh graders. Kadin Ridenour added 75 yards on the ground with a score. Brady Davis completed his only pass, a 20-yard touchdown to Bennett Weitzel. Dowlen led the defense too with four tackles and a fumble recovery.
Faulkner tallied three rushing touchdowns to lead the eighth grade Patriots. He had TD runs of 10, 20 and 50 yards respectively. Tarron Bentz also found the end zone from 5 yards out.
Chief boys second
DECATUR — The East Jay Middle School boys cross country team finished second Thursday in the Bellmont Conditioner.
Riverview won the team title with 30 points, edging East Jay by two points. Woodlan was third with 33 points.
Riverview swept the championships by winning the girls title with 17 points. Norwell placed second with 22 points and Adams Central was third with 24. East Jay totaled 29 for fourth.
In the 2-mile relay, Dustin Harris and Nico Minnich were seventh overall, one spot ahead of Tony Wood and Cameron Clark.
The tandem of Sebastian Solis and Thomas LeMaster placed 18th, and Tyler Manor and Al Hemmelgarn finished 21st.
East Jay’s top girls team of Lydia Keihn and Lindy Wood were fourth, as Mara Bader and Rachel Heitkamp were sixth. Olivia Wood and Azalea Smith placed 19th. Emily Dues and Savanna Hamilton finished 24th.
Chiefs sweep Heritage
East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both swept the visiting Heritage Patriots on Thursday.
The eighth grade team won 25-10, 25-12, while the seventh graders won 25-19, 25-14.
Madison Dirksen and Madison Jetmore had nine and eight service points respectively.
Dirksen tallied six aces while Jetmore tallied five aces. Maddy Wenk had five points on three aces.
Laci McGinnis led the seventh graders with five points, and Laruen Brewster had four points. Madison Brunswick chipped in three points. Kylee Gross and Lauren Brewster each had kills.
EJ sixth both lose
The East Jay sixth grade volleyball teams on Thursday both lost the visiting Selma Braves.
The A team fell 25-19, 25-12, while the B squad dropped its match 25-16, 25-20.
Brenna Haines had four kills to lead the A team, which also got kills from Riah Champ and Kylie Davidson.
Champ added nine points on four aces, and Sophie Saxman had a pair of assists.
Kenzie Landon had the only kill for the B squad. Tessa Miller totaled two aces on her way to five points, and Paityn Chapman had three points on one ace.
