The Patriots had their chances.
They just weren’t able to convert them.
The Jay County High School boys soccer team played to its third draw of the season Tuesday as it tied the visiting Richmond Red Devils, 0-0.
Jay County (2-3-3) was overmatched in terms of speed, but its defense didn’t allow too many scoring opportunities on goalkeeper Seth Fugiett.
At the other end of the field, forwards Daniel Fugiett, Derrian Riojas, Angel Perez and Korbin Auker also had some chances but they came up empty.
It was the third tie in the last four games for the Patriots, who are 1-0-3 in that span. Jay County ends a three-game homestand at 5 p.m. Thursday as it hosts the Bellmont Braves.
Jets topple Patriots
Jay County’s boys tennis team dropped its second straight conference match on Tuesday with a 5-0 loss to the Adams Central Flying Jets on senior night.
Garrett Rodgers, a senior, battled with Jaxson Rinkenberger at No. 1 singles but fell to the ACHS junior 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. The Patriots’ other singles player, Payton Heniser, dropped his No. 2 singles match to Cam Burkhart 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Conner Benter fell to Adam Busse 6-2, 6-0.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Ethan Myers and Xavier Ninde lost to Kyle Arnold and Lucas Harvey 6-0, 6-1. Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match at No. 2 doubles to Kade Moser and Dylan Hurst.
The Patriots dipped to 3-7 (0-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) on the season.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 7-0.
Golf ends with loss
WARREN — The Jay County girls golf team finished its regular season schedule Tuesday with a 218-230 loss to Southern Wells at Dogwood Glen Golf Course.
Abby Huey shot a career-best 51 to lead the Patriots (2-12, 0-5 Allen County Athletic Conference). Jazzmine Howell was second on the team with 55, and Raquel Wehrly was third with 61. Eden Basford completed the team score with a round of 63.
Madalyn Garringer also competed but she did not factor into the team score. She finished with 68.
Jay County begins postseason play at 9:15 p.m. Saturday in the sectional tournament at Crestview Golf Course in Muncie.
Eighth graders win
DUNKIRK — The Jay County middle school eighth grade football team picked up a 45-6 victory on Tuesday against the Southern Wells Raiders at West Jay Middle School.
Quinn Faulkner and Tarron Bentz both had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Patriots, who led 23-0 at halftime. Faulkner scored from 98 and 47 yards respectively, while Bentz added TDs of 40 and 50 yards.
Blayne Daniels and Caleb Hale also had rushing touchdowns of 35 and 65 yards respectively.
Patriot seventh falls
DUNKIRK — Jay County’s middle school seventh grade football team lost for the first time this season Tuesday with a 25-18 defeat to the Woodlan Warriors at West Jay Middle School.
Kadin Ridenour had 85 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Patriots (3-1, 2-1 Allen County Athletic Conference). Josh Dowlen and Mason Ludy had 70 and 55 rushing yards respectively.
Patrick Hemmelgarn tossed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Bennet Weitzel.
Ludy led the Patriot defense with six tackles, including two in the backfield. Ridenour also had five defensive stops.
Chiefs sweep Jets
East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams entertained the Adams Central Flying Jets on Tuesday and both teams came away with victories.
The eighth grade squad won 25-11, 25-18, and the seventh grade squad earned a 25-18, 25-23 victory.
Madison Dirksen led the EJMS eighth graders (5-0) with eight kills. She also had three blocks and assisted on another. Ralyn Chaffins was second on the team with three kills and a dozen service points. Maddy Wenk’s 15 points, five aces and five digs were all team highs.
Laci McGinnis tallied four service points, three kills, two digs and two aces for the seventh grade Chiefs. Lauren Brewster tallied five points, three digs, two aces and two kills, while Eden Abshire had three digs, two points and an ace.
