FORT RECOVERY — For the second time in eight days, the Indians met a conference opponent ranked in the top 10 in the state.

This time, they came away with a win.

Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team bounced back from a first-set loss to win three straight Thursday in a 14-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 victory over the Division IV No. 1 New Bremen Cardinals at Fort Site Fieldhouse.

Carley Stone paced the Division IV No. 6 Indians (9-1, 2-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) with 14 kills, while adding 10 digs and a pair of blocks. Paige Fortkamp had a career-high 13 kills to finish second on the team, and Paige Jutte was third with nine kills. Martin also totaled a team-best three digs.

Hannah Knapke and Kiah Wendel recorded 18 and 17 digs respectively, and Alexis Bubp contributed 13 digs. Madi Rammel tallied 40 assists for the Indians, who lost to Division IV No. 3 St. Henry in three sets on Sept. 7

The Fort Recovery junior varsity team beat the Cardinals 23-25, 25-19, 25-18.

Chloe Showalter led the Indians with nine kills, and Kierra Wendel was second with five kills. Rachel Acheson had 10 digs, while Hope Wendel tallied nine assists.



Patriots fall, 3-2

WINCHESTER — Jay County’s boys tennis team dropped a 3-2 match Thursday to sectional rival Winchester Golden Falcons.

Garrett Rodgers and Conner Benter accounted for the wins for the Patriots (3-8). Rodgers defeated Trey Graft at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4, while Benter won his No. 3 singles match 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 over Nick Dunica.

Jay County senior Payton Heniser lost at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4 to Justin McAllister.

The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Ethan Myers and Xavier Myers lost to Thad Legear and Alex Pegg 6-1, 6-3. Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall dropped their No. 2 doubles match, 7-5, 6-2, to Flynt Runkle and Garrett Wagner.

The JCHS junior varsity team won, 2-1. Gabe Blankenship won his singles match 8-6, while Calvin Whitney and Christian Romero teamed for an 8-5 win in their doubles contest.



SA lose to Patriots

MONROEVILLE — Without one of its top players, the South Adams volleyball team lost for the second time in as many matches with a 25-22, 25-11, 18-25, 14-25, 15-11 defeat to the Heritage Patriots on Thursday.

South Adams (13-6, 2-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) was without senior Addie Wanner who suffered a broken nose Tuesday in a five-set loss to Fort Recovery.

Madi Wurster had 22 kills against Heritage while also adding six blocks, six digs and two aces.

Jade Farlow and Shaelynn Bowman both recorded nine kills, while Bowman added three blocks. Julia Grabau had a team-best 34 assists and six aces, and Ayla Rossworm’s seven digs led the Starfires.

The South Adams junior varsity team also lost, 25-11, 25-17. Savannah Alberson and Hannah Beitler led the Starfire with four and three kills respectively. Josie Grabau had eight assists and seven digs in the loss.



Squaws beat Jay girls

DECATUR — The Bellmont Squaws handed the Jay County girls soccer team its second loss in as many games Thursday, 6-2.

The host Squaws scored five goals in the opening half and led 5-1 at halftime.

Junior Kendra Muhlenkamp scored her 17th goal of the season, moving into a tie with senior Lucy Laux as the scoring leader for Jay County (7-2), which won the first seven games of the year. Amanda Ferguson notched her first career goal in the second half.

Laux added an assist.



Dellinger leads Stars

FORT WAYNE — Lexi Dellinger had five goals in leading the South Adams to a 7-3 win Thursday over the host South Side Archers.

Madi Smith had one goal and three assists for the Starfires (6-4).

Jenna Myers made nine saves in goal, and Kelsa Ortiz had six stops.



Chiefs top Eagles

DUNKIRK — The East Jay Middle School sixth grade volleyball team defeated the West Jay Eagles on Thursday, 25-22, 15-25, 15-10.

Kenzie Landon led East Jay with two kills, while Maggie Dillon, Bralee VanSkyock, Brenna Haines, Riah Champ and Sophie Saxman all had one kill. Champ tacked on seven service points, Dillon tallied five points and Danielle May, VanSkyock and Landon each had four points.

Champ notched seven aces.

West Jay stats were not provided.
