The Bruins visited Portland on Monday and left licking their wounds.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team overmatched the Blackford Bruins in a 25-4, 25-14, 25-13 home victory.
Kaelyn Weaver led the Patriots (10-7) with nine kills. Chloe Trissel and Sara Hemmelgarn both had four kills to finish second on the team, while Natalie Miles tallied three kills.
Kailee Denney’s 16 assists and four aces were both team highs, and she also had five digs. Kendal Garringer and Randi Ferguson chipped in three aces, and Maggie Pryor had a team-best 11 digs.
Jay County’s junior varsity squad also won, 25-19, 25-15.
Hemmelgarn led the team with eight kills, and Hallie Fields was one behind her to finish second on the team. Pacie Denney tallied 14 assists, Lyric Garringer had 11 digs and Emma James had a pair of aces.
Streak extended
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery volleyball team extended its winning streak to four matches Monday with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-15 over the Russia Raiders.
It’s the second time this season the Division IV No. 4 Indians (10-1) have had a winning streak of four or more matches.
Cassidy Martin paced the Tribe with nine kills. She was also second on the team with three blocks. Carley Stone and Paige Jutte both had seven kills and two blocks, while Stone’s 10 digs tied Hannah Knapke for second on the team.
Brooke Gaerke racked up eight blocks, Kiah Wendel had 21 digs and Madi Rammel tallied 27 assists.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team won, 25-11, 25-22.
Val Muhlenkamp led the way with seven kills, and Chloe Showalter’s four kills were second on the team. She also had five assists, five digs and four aces. Brooke Kahlig led the defense with 10 digs, and Rachel Acheson had 14 assists.
Star tennis falls
BERNE — South Adams’ boys tennis team dipped to 4-10 on the season Monday with a 4-1 loss to the Wayne Generals.
David Muselman, a senior, was the lone winner for the Starfires. He swept Ben Dimino in their No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Cam Stevens fell to Lwin Aung 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Wes Stout dropped his No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-1, to Jaymason Curry.
The SAHS No. 1 doubles team of James Fosnaugh and Brayden Gilbert lost 6-1, 6-0 to Samuel Laird and Nick Chapman, while Paul Stuckey and Travis Clingenpeel fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles to Nick Beer and Noah Thompson.

BLUFFTON — The Landon Grimes-to-Elijah Corwin connection was in full effect Monday.
Corwin caught eight of Grimes’ 10 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Jay County junior varsity football team to a 38-24 win over Bluffton.
Grimes finished 10-of-18 passing for 238 yards. Rylee Huftel added 90 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while Bailey Cox also had a rushing touchdown for the Patriots (3-2), who have now won three in a row.
Jay County’s defense forced four turnovers, with Zakk Atkins, Sheldon Eley, Cox and Huftel each picking off Bluffton passes.
Fort Frosh win
VERSAILLES, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team defeated the Versailles Tigers on Monday, 25-11, 25-22.
Kendra Dues and Ava Bubp both had four kills to lead the Indians. Hope Wendel and Bubp both had four assists, which were team highs. Kyra Clark had three kills, and Wendel chipped in two kills.
Brenna Homan’s 10 digs were a team best. Dues, Bubp and Wendel all had four digs.
Eagles sweep Chiefs
The East Jay Middle School sixth and seventh grade volleyball teams both lost Monday to the visiting Delta Eagles.
The Chief seventh graders fell 25-12, 25-16, and the sixth grade squad lost 25-13, 15-25, 15-11.
Lauren Brewster led the seventh graders with three kills. Laci McGinnis and Madison Brunswick both had one kill. Morgan Reier had eight digs to lead the team, while Brewster tallied five and Brunswick notched four digs to go with her team-high four service points.
Sophie Saxman and Riah Champ had two kills to lead the Chief sixth graders. Maggie Dillon had 10 service points with six aces, and Champ tallied 11 points with five aces.
Bralee VanSkyock, Hannah Laux and Dillon had one kill each.
Eighth grade stats were not provided.
