Nominations sought by Jay Chamber
Business Roundup
It’s time to start thinking about awards.
Jay County Chamber of Commerce is continuing to accept nominations for its 2017 Jay County Community Awards. Categories include business, citizen, innovator, industry, not-for-profit and young professional of the year, Dunkirk Community Commitment and lifetime achievement.
Nomination forms are available online at bit.do/JCCAnomination. The deadline is Dec. 1.
Earned
The Adams County Diabetes Connection program at Adams Memorial Hospital has earned the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate.
The program provides diabetes education to community members through group classes and individual appointments, according to a hospital press release.
The American Diabetes Association reviews educational programs to see if they meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. The process is voluntary, and the diabetes connection program was originally recognized in 2003.
The recognition is applicable for the next four years.
Expansion
Miller’s Merry Manor in Logansport is building a 7,500-square-foot expansion.
The nursing home’s update will cost between $2.5 and $3 million dollars, according to a company press release, and will add therapy and exercise space, a community room, a heated pool and an updated facade.
The nursing home’s location was formerly a hospital. It became a Miller’s Merry Manor facility in 1984, and currently hosts between 100 and 150 residents.
Pay Less
Kroger has provided an update on the renovation of two former Marsh stores in Muncie.
Kroger bought several Marsh Supermarkets locations over the summer after the business filed for bankruptcy. The two locations the company bought in Muncie are being converted into Pay Less supermarkets, a subsidiary of Kroger.
For the location on McGalliard Road, the renovation is slated for completion in mid- to late-December. The Tillotson Avenue location renovation should be completed early next year, The Star Press (Muncie) reported.
Fraudulent texts
First Merchants Bank is warning customers and non-customers that they may receive text messages claiming to be from the company.
The messages provide a phone number, asking people to call regarding their accounts. Once the number is called, an automated message asks for the caller’s Social Security number, debit card number and account number.
First Merchants Bank, which is headquartered in Muncie and has two Portland locations, said in a press release that the company will never ask customers to provide confidential information over the phone.
Invests
Honda of America invested $267 million and will add 300 new jobs to its Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio.
The investment will support the production of the Honda Accord, which has been continuously produced at the plant since 1982. The plant will produce the 2018 Accord, which features improvements such as a new chassis, a 10-speed automatic transmission and new airbags.
Honda of America is a customer of FCC (Indiana).
On hold
Tyson Foods Inc. put its plans for a $320 million poultry complex in Tonganoxie, Kansas, on hold after protests from the community.
The plant would have produced pre-packaged trays of chicken for retail stores and employed 1,600 workers.
Residents of the town were concerned about Tyson’s business practices, according to an article from KSHB-TV (Kansas City). The Leavenworth County Commission also voted to revoke a bond support resolution for the plant.
Tyson, parent company of Tyson Mexican Original in Portland, plans to look at other locations in Kansas and other states that have expressed interest in the plant.
To open
Taco Bell announced plans to open 300 to 350 locations without drive thrus by 2022 in urban areas.
These locations, which will also serve alcohol, will be built in big cities such as Detroit, New York and Boston. They will be “cantina-style” and will feature open kitchens and a menu of shareable items, according to an article by Eater.
Factory opening
A cargo trailer manufacturer is opening a factory in Marion, its second location in Indiana.
Stealth Trailers announced it expects to start operations at the Marion factory by Oct. 1 and anticipates employing up to 115 people at the site by 2020.
