After a big Allen County Athletic Conference win Tuesday, the Patriots didn’t let up.
The Jay County High School volleyball team got off to a hot start Thursday, winning the first two sets and settling down late for a 25-7, 25-16, 14-25, 25-21 victory over the Wes-Del Warriors.
Sophomore Olivia Kunkler served Jay County (12-7) to the first six points of the match and the Patriots rode that momentum into a commanding two-set lead over the visiting Warriors. Wes-Del then nabbed the third set and stayed with Jay County to 20-20, before the Patriots pulled away for the win.
Kunkler had a team-best 20 service points and was second on the team with 14 kills. Kaelyn Weaver led Jay County — it defeated defending champion South Adams in five sets on Thursday — with 18 kills, and Sarah Walter joined them in double digits with 10 kills.
Chloe Trissel and Walter had 16 and 14 digs respectively to pace the Patriot defense. Maggie Pryor and Natalie Miles had a dozen digs each.
Jay County’s junior varsity team won 16-25, 25-22, 15-9. Sara Hemmelgarn and Hallie Fields led the Patriots with 15 and 10 kills respectively. Randi Ferguson tallied 19 digs, and Emma James had 25 assists.
Tennis beats Stars
BERNE — Jay County’s boys tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak Thursday as it defeated South Adams, 3-2.
Conner Benter, a JCHS junior, picked up the only singles victory for the Patriots (4-9, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference). He defeated Wes Stout 6-0, 6-0 in their No. 3 singles tilt.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Xavier Ninde and Ethan Myers knocked off James Fosnaugh and Brayden Gilbert 7-5, 6-2, while Sheldon Upp and Gavin Randall defeated Paul Stuckey and Travis Clingenpeel 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
South Adams senior David Muselman beat Jay County’s Garrett Rodgers 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and at No. 2 singles Cam Stevens outlasted Payton Heniser 6-3, 7-6 (12-10).
Tribe upends Flyers
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery volleyball team dropped the first set but won the next three Thursday in beating the Division IV No. 8 Marion Local Flyers, 18-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-19.
Carley Stone and Cassy Martin both had 10 kills for the Division IV No. 4 Indians (11-2, 3-2 Midwest Athletic Conference). Martin had a team-best six blocks, and Stone was second on the team with four blocks. Stone also had five digs, while she and Martin both notched aces.
Paige Jutte was third with eight kills, and Madi Rammel tallied seven kills to go with her team-high 28 assists. Hannah Knapke and Kiah Wendel both recorded 20 digs.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team won 25-14, 23-25, 25-22.
Chloe Showalter paced the Trie with nine kills. Kierra Wendel notched 16 digs, as Rachel Acheson had 12 assists and three aces, both of which were tops on the team.
Stars sweep Falcons
WINCHESTER — South Adams’ volleyball team swept the host Winchester Golden Falcons on Thursday, 25-21, 25-17, 25-7.
Madi Wurster and Addie Wanner led the Starfires (14-7) with 10 and eight kills respectively. South Adams had 12 total aces, and Shania Neal had a team-best four aces.
Wurster added three blocks and three aces, as Shaelynn Bowman and Wanner both had two blocks. Julia Grabau totaled 19 assists.
South Adams’ junior varsity team also won, 25-4, 25-21.
Gabriella Bailey and Laryson Ziegler had two kills each in leading the Stars, who got 11 assists from Josie Grabau and five aces from Jade Baker.
SA falls to Wayne
BERNE — The South Adams girls soccer team couldn’t keep up with the Wayne Generals on Thursday in a 4-1 loss.
Wayne (6-8) led 2-0 at half and tacked on a couple more goals in the final 40 minutes for the win.
Kayla Bunkowske, Arianna Bradshaw, Kara Gerber and April Salazarr all scored for the Generals, who peppered SAHS goalkeeper Jenna Myers with 37 total shots. Myers stopped 25 of the 29 shots on goal.
Emilee Myers provided the only tally for the Starfires (6-5-1).
Keihn leads Chiefs
MODOC — Lydia Keihn finished first Thursday, leading the East Jay Middle School girls cross country team to a second-place finish in a four-team meet at Union.
Monroe Central and East Jay tied with 34 points, but Monroe Central won because of a sixth-runner tiebreaker. Wes-Del was third with 61 points.
Monroe Central’s boys also won with 26 points. East Jay was second with 33 and Wes-Del was third with 84.
Keihn won with a time of 13 minutes, 32 seconds. Rachel Heitkamp was second on the team in third. Lindy Wood placed seventh, Emily Dues finished 11th and Olivia Waters was 12th.
Cameron Clark led the EJMS boys by finishing second in 12:18. Tyler Manor (fifth), Thomas LeMaster (seventh), Dustin Harrison (ninth) and Josh Monroe (10th) also scored for the Chiefs.

East Jay’s seventh grade volleyball team held off the Union City Indians on Thursday, 25-14, 21-25, 15-4.
Laci McGinnis led the Chiefs with 11 kills. She also had two aces. Gracie Barnett totaled three kills and three digs. Lauren Brewster compiled five aces and six digs, as Morgan Reier tallied five digs and four aces.
