Middle school football thumps Heritage

MONROEVILLE — The visiting Patriots controlled every aspect of the game.
It resulted in a lopsided shutout.
The Jay County middle school Patriot football team totaled five rushing touchdowns and had three scores on special teams Tuesday in a 62-0 victory over the host Heritage Patriots.
Tarron Bentz and Quinn Faulkner both had a pair of rushing scores for Jay County. Blayne Daniels shined on special teams, returning a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns. Caleb Hale also had a punt return touchdown.
Flint Schmiesing, who amassed more than 100 yards on the ground, also had a rushing TD.
Zeke Corwin, Ramone Bravo, Ben Nichols and Kess McBride all had sacks for Jay County’s defense.
EJ runners win
DUNKIRK — East Jay’s boys and girls cross country teams both finished first on Tuesday in a three-team meet with Winchester Driver and host West Jay.
The East Jay boys totaled 21 points for first. West Jay was second with 49 and Winchester totaled 92 for third.
East Jay’s girls team scored 26 points, ahead of West Jay (45) and Winchester (61).
Cameron Clark of EJMS won the boys race in 11 minutes, 36 seconds. Tony Wood placed second for the Chiefs. Tyler Manor (fourth), Sebastian Solis (sixth) and Josh Monroe (eight) also scored for the Chiefs.
Aaron Funkhouser was the lead WJMS boy as he finished third. Trenton Alexander was fifth, Skyler Bee placed 11th, Gage Baker ended in 12th and Logan Zimmerman was 18th.
Lydia Keihn (12:47) of East Jay won the girls race. She was followed by teammates Lindy Wood (third), Mara Bader (fourth), Emily Dues (eighth) and Olivia Waters (10th).
Raven Weaver paced the WJMS girls by finishing second. Lizzie Dollar was seventh, Makinsey Murphy crossed the finish line in ninth, Aubree Hatzell placed 12th and Madison Oliver was 15th.
Chiefs sweep Raiders
PONETO — The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams on Tuesday both swept the Southern Wells Raiders.
The eighth grade Chiefs won 25-13, 24-14, while the seventh graders picked up a 25-10, 25-13 win.
Madison Dirksen led the EJMS eighth graders with three kills. Madison Jetmore and Ralyn Chaffins had two kills apiece. Dirksen had seven aces on her way to eight service points, while Maddy Wenk tallied eight points, half of which were aces. Lindy Mercer and Wenk had four assists each.
Morgan Reier led the seventh graders with two kills and 10 points. She also notched four aces. Laci McGinnis had a team-high seven aces, and Gracie Barnett had three digs. Lauren Brewster had four points and two digs.
Tigers top Chiefs
YORKTOWN — East Jay’s sixth grade volleyball teams both lost to the Yorktown Tigers on Tuesday.
The A team fell 25-10, 25-14, and the B squad lost its one-set match, 25-24.
Isabella Denton and Bralee VanSkyock both had one kill for the A team. Sophie Saxman had three digs, while Tessa Miller and VanSkyock both had two digs. Riah Champ led the team in both service points (six) and aces (three).
Hannah Laux had five points, three of which were aces, for the Chiefs B team. Ava Daniels and Paityn Chapman both had one ace.
Stars split with Jets
MONROE — The South Adams Middle School football teams split games on Tuesday with the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
The eighth grade Starfires won 28-6, while the seventh grade team fell 27-7.
In the eighth grade game, Uriel Hernandez took the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and added a 47-yard TD run in the third quarter.
AJ Dull had a 6-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, and Aidan Wanner connected with Trey Schoch for a 40-yard score in the final period.
Brady Beall threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Maverick Summersett as the only SAMS touchdown in the seventh grade contest.
Panthers sweep Indians
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both lost on Tuesday to the Parkway Panthers.
The eighth graders fell 25-21, 25-23, while the seventh graders lost 25-11, 19-25, 25-22.
Whitley Rammel and Marissa Gaerke led the eighth graders with five kills apiece. Melissa Laux and Grace Guggenbiller had three and two kills respectively. Madelyn Knapke totaled eight assists and seven service points.
Brookelyn Jutte had six kills to pace the seventh grade team. Faith Wendel and Allysen Fullenkamp both had four assists and three kills. Audra Bubp had a team-high seven digs, and Jutte recorded five aces.
