FORT RECOVERY — A week after stunning the fourth-ranked team in Division VII in overtime, the Indians lost their magic.

Hosting a squad that entered Friday with just one win, the Fort Recovery High School football team was hurt by a blocked punt early and never got on track. The Tribe had slight edges in yardage and time of possession, but struggled to finish drives in a 35-14 loss to the Versailles Tigers.

Versailles (2-4, 1-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) had lost four straight, but took advantage of a short field after Garrett Thompson blocked a Josh Muhlenkamp punt and recovered the ball less than five minutes into the game.

The Tigers were in the end zone one play later on a 3-yard Kurtis Rutschilling run and they never gave up their lead.

Meanwhile Fort Recovery (3-3, 2-2 MAC) was often able to move the ball down the field only to fall short of the end zone. Its next drive stalled out at the 23-yard line. It had a total of four drives come to a halt inside the Versailles 30-yard line, including a pair in the red zone.

After the Tigers took a 14-0 lead, Fort Recovery mustered some hope when a 12-play, 66-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Clay Schmitz to Ryan Braun closed the gap to seven at halftime. But Versailles reached the end zone on its first three possessions of the second half to build a 21-point cushion that was too big for the Tribe to overcome.

Rutschilling carried the Tigers to the win with 141 yards and three touchdowns — he had scoring runs of 3 and 15 yards in the second half — on just 13 carries. Thompson added 43 yards on the ground, and Noah Waymire was efficient through the air by completing four of his five attempts for 67 yards.

Senior Will Homan carried the load for FRHS, racking up 228 yards on 26 carries. He had a 55-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.

The aerial attack was lacking for the Indians, with Schmitz, a freshman, going 8-of-27 for 92 yards with a TD and an interception. Cade Wendel, the former quarterback, caught four of those passes for 58 yards.

Fort Recovery will be at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park again next week as it hosts St. John’s (4-2, 2-2 MAC) for homecoming.
