FORT WAYNE — The Padres have an excellent farm system.

As a result, the TinCaps will be loaded with talent.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps, the Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, announced their initial 25-man roster for the 2018 season Sunday, and the group of players who will call Parkview Field home for the year includes plenty of elite prospects.

Fort Wayne opens its season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) before its home opener at 6:05 p.m. Saturday against the Captains.

MacKenzie Gore, a left-handed pitcher who was the third overall pick in June’s First-Year Player Draft, highlights a TinCap roster that features seven of the Padres’ top 30 prospects.

In March, MLB.com’s MLB Pipeline staff ranked the San Diego Padres as having the top farm system in all of baseball.

Gore, a 19-year-old from Whiteville, North Carolina, who is listed as the No. 2 prospect in San Diego’s system, struck out 34 batters with seven walks in 21 1/3 innings as he compiled a 1.27 ERA in seven starts for the Padres’ fall league team in Arizona. While in high school, the southpaw had 332 strikeouts combined over his junior and senior seasons. His ERA was 0.08 and 0.19 respectively his final two years of high school.

Infielder Gabriel Arias, an Aragua, Venezuela, native and the Padres’ No. 11 prospect, is one of 11 players on the roster who spent time in Fort Wayne last season. He had a .242 batting average in 16 games.

Other players listed in MLB.com’s Top 30 Padres Prospects are infielder Esteury Ruiz (No. 12), outfielders Tirso Ornelas (No. 15) and Jeisson Rosario (No. 19), catcher Luis Campusano (No. 24) and right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson (No. 25).

Thompson, a 20-year-old who stands 6 feet, 7 inches, tall, played for the TinCaps a year ago.

“This will be similar to what we had last year,” said third-year TinCaps manager Anthony Contreras. “We have lots of guys with incredible talent, but for most, this will be their first season of professional baseball.

“So like we saw last year, there will be growing pains, but 2017 also proved that if you trust in your routines, work hard, don’t get too high or too low, and act as a professional, things should work out well.”

The TinCaps are coming off a season during which they made an unlikely run to the Midwest League Championship Series. They had the worst record (26-44) in the first half of the year, but bounced back to go 42-28 in their final 70 games to win the MWL Eastern Division title.

The Quad Cities River Bandits swept the TinCaps 3-0 to win their third MWL title in seven years.
