ELWOOD — The Patriots used a six-run third inning to build a lead.
The?Panthers nearly clawed all the way back.
Jay County High School’s softball team picked up its first win of the year on Friday with a 12-10 win over the Elwood Panthers.
The Patriots?(1-1) fell behind 7-4 after the first inning but scored six times in the third for a lead it never gave up. Elwood chipped away with three runs in the sixth inning but got nothing more.
Hannah Phillips led the Patriots with three hits.?Randi Ferguson had a double and a single, while Maggie Pryor and Kensey Litton both had a pair of singles.
Jay drops opener
ELWOOD?— Jay County’s baseball team dropped its season opener on Friday to the Elwood Panthers, 11-10.
The?Patriots (0-1)?led 10-7 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning, but allowed the Panthers to score four runs to take the advantage that stood for the rest of the game.
Ryan Schlechty had three of the Patriots’ eight hits. Mitchel Frasher drove in three runs, while Michael Schlechty, Payton Heniser, Gabe Faulkner and Ryan Schlechty each drove in a run.
Faulkner got the first hit of his varsity career, and Max Moser singled in the fourth inning to push his hitting streak to 19 games, dating back to the fourth game of the 2017 season.
Indians win two
FORT RECOVERY and GREENVILLE, Ohio — The Fort Recovery baseball team won a pair of games recently.
On Friday at home, Drew?Muhlenkamp and Ryne Post combined to throw a no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Houston.
Muhlenkamp struck out five and walked three in three innings before Post fanned a pair and walked one in four innings of relief.
Ben Homan and Kody Shinabery both had doubles. Ethan Schoen knocked in three runs.
On Saturday at Greenville, the Indians (6-1) scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Green Wave 11-0.
Cade Wendel, Will Homan and Nick Thwaits had two hits each, while Reese Rogers pitched the shutout.

FORT?RECOVERY — Aleigha Jenkins got hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to give the Fort Recovery softball team a 6-5 win over Franklin-Monroe.
Brenna Homan began the inning with a single and reached second on a stolen base. She moved up one base on an error before Hannah Knapke walked to load the bases.
Following a pop out, Jenkins got hit on a 1-0 pitch to give the Indians (3-1)?the victory.
Bailee Tebbe, Homan and Jenkins had two hits each for the Tribe. Lydia Wenning and Tebbe each drove in a pair of runs.
