Elaine Shakley
A Service of Music and Gratitude celebrating the life of Elaine Shakley will be April 14, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 404 E. Arch St., Portland, Indiana. Calling at the church will begin at 10 a.m.
She passed away Dec. 3, 2017, at Jay County Hospital. She was born in Boswell, Pennsylvania, in 1922, the daughter of John and Beatrice Morrison. She was married in 1943 to Glenn Shakley, and he died in 1993.
She was an accomplished musician for more than 50 years in Cleveland, Ohio, teaching music and starting a string program, and was the first educational television teacher in the city of Cleveland. She was a church organist for over 50 years and a past president of the American Guide of Organists.
Surviving are three daughters Susan Lippert (Tim) of Portland, Maine, Bonnie Maitlen (Gary) of Portland, Indiana, and Pamela Van Siclen (the Rev. John) of Newcastle, Maine; one sister Rachel Jones (Milton) of Boulder, Colorado; six grandsons and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or MusicWorks Scholarships at Arts Place in Portland.
