BERNE — After squandering a bases-loaded opportunity in the game’s first inning, the Starfires didn’t have many chances for the next four.

But the Tribe didn’t add to its lead, either.

Running out of chances, Collin Shaffer got his team back in the game with one swing of the bat. A bit of fundamental baseball gave it the win.

Shaffer launched a solo home run to tie the score, and four batters later Terry Dawn gave the South Adams High School baseball team a lead it didn’t give up in a 3-1 victory over the Fort Recovery Indians on Friday at Harry F. Anderson Field.

Shaffer launched a 1-1 offering from Reese Rogers over the wall in left field to chase Rogers from the game. Isaiah Baumgartner drew a walk off Ryne Post before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mark Clary. Braden Baumer got hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners and Dawn singled to give Class 2A No. 4 South Adams (4-1) a 2-1 advantage. One batter later, Grady Sprunger hit a pinch-hit RBI single for the final run.

Fort Recovery, which has lost back-to-back games and dips to 8-3, scored its only run way back in the first inning. Will Homan hit a one-out single and stole second, and then crossed the plate on a single from Ben Homan.

Tribe beats ’Hawks

UNION CITY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team got back in the win column Friday with a 15-7 drubbing of the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks.

Both teams scored five runs in the first inning, but Fort Recovery notched one run in the second and two in the third for an 8-6 advantage heading into the fourth inning.

The Indians (5-3) put up five more runs in the sixth inning and added two more in the seventh for good measure in its highest scoring game of the season.

Olivia Homan smashed her first career home run, a three-run blast, in the fifth inning. She also had a single, two walks and scored three times.

Bailee Tebbe, Rachel Thien and Brenna Homan all had two singles, as Taylor Grisez and Tebbe both drove in a pair of runs.

Olivia Homan also got the win in the circle as she surrendered seven earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Stars stay unbeaten

BERNE — The South Adams softball team kept its perfect season intact Friday with a doubleheader sweep of the Norwell Knights.

The matchup was moved from today because of the threat of inclement weather.

South Adams (5-0) grabbed the first game 5-1, and completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in game two.

In the first contest, the Starfires fell behind 1-0 after the first inning before taking a 3-1 lead in the fourth and adding two insurance runs in the fifth.

The second game saw South Adams once again fall behind in the top of the first, but the home team responded with two runs in its half inning. Four frames later South Adams pushed its advantage to the final score.

Emilie Hammell and Isabella Ramirez both finished the day with a double and two singles.
