FORT RECOVERY — The Flyers had to work to tie the game in the top of the third inning.

With one swing, Ben Homan dashed any hopes they had.

Then the Indians tacked on more for good measure.

Homan had a bases-clearing triple in the home half of the fourth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, and the Fort Recovery High School baseball team went on to beat the Marion Local Flyers 10-1 Thursday.

Following Homan’s triple, Nick Thwaits completed the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Indians (11-3, 4-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) added four runs in the fifth inning and tacked on one more in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Homan also had s single as he was 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the Tribe, which moved into a four-way tie atop the MAC standings with Coldwater, New Bremen and St. Henry. Ian Homan, Riley Post, Kody Shinabery and Thwaits (three RBIs) also had singles for the Indians. 


Reese Rogers earned the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three.



Tribe falls to Flyers

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team fell to .500 on the year Thursday as it lost to the host Marion Local Flyers, 9-3.

It was the third straight Midwest Athletic Conference loss for Fort Recovery (5-5, 1-3 MAC) and their third loss in the last four games.

Marion Local (3-7, 2-3 MAC) scored the first five runs of the game before Fort Recovery broke the shutout with one run in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 5-1. In the home half of the frame, though, the Flyers added four runs. The Indians pushed across two runs in the sixth inning but weren’t able to get any more.

Hannah Knapke had two doubles and an RBI for the Indians. Brenna Homan contributed two singles, while Taylor Thien, Aleigha Jenkins, Olivia Homan, Rachel Thien and Alli Vaughn each had singles.



Yoder lifts Starfires

BLUFFTON — Keagan Yoder cleared the bases with a two-out double in the top of the fourth inning Thursday, giving the South Adams baseball team a lead it never gave up on the way to a 9-2 victory over the Bluffton Tigers in its Allen County Athletic Conference opener.

South Adams, which finished ninth in the most recent Class 2A coaches poll, moved to 7-1 (1-0 ACAC) on the year.

After the Starfires nabbed a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, Bluffton took a lead with one run in the bottom of the frame and another in the third inning.

South Adams scored seven runs over the third and fourth innings.

Mark Clary had two doubles and a single for the Starfires while also adding an RBI and two runs. Baumgartner finished with two hits, as Grant Besser, Joe Stuber, Collin Shaffer, Terry Dawn and Grady Sprunger each had singles.



Big third lifts Stars

BLUFFTON — An eight-run third inning lifted the South Adams softball team to a 12-0 victory Thursday over the Bluffton Tigers in five innings.

South Adams moved to 7-0 on the year and 1-0 in Allen County Athletic Conference play.

Emilie Hammell and Jade Baker both had RBI singles in the third inning, and Josie Hall contributed a bases-clearing double. 

Anna Nussbaum ripped a three-run double and Jenna Myers drove her in during a four-run fifth inning.

Nussbaum only allowed two hits over five innings while striking out eight. At the plate, she had two doubles and a single. Kayla LeFever also had a single.



SA tennis wins

DECATUR — South Adams’ girls tennis team moved to 3-1 on the year with a 3-2 victory over the host Bellmont Squaws.

Julia Grabau, the SAHS No. 2 singles player, defeated Cassidy Lincoln 6-3, 6-0, and Hannah Dull beat Janae Butler 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. They both moved to 4-0 on the year.

At No. 1 singles, Haley Gerber fell to Carrington Bultemeier 6-4, 6-4.

South Adams and Bellmont split the doubles matches, with the Starfires getting the win at No. 1 doubles. Breanna Potts and Jade Farlow defeated Mackenzie Hackman and Kelsey Dorhman 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Katrina Fosnaugh and Cassie Yoder of South Adams lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Juliana Hammond and Rylie Houser.
