SIDNEY, Ohio — Consecutive two-out singles loaded the bases for Lydia Wenning in the first inning Friday.

She cleared them on the first pitch she saw.

Wenning, a sophomore, hit a grand slam in leading the Fort Recovery High School softball team to a 7-4 victory against the host Lehman Catholic Cavaliers.

It was the second home run of Wenning’s career.

Fort Recovery (6-5) led from wire-to-wire, adding two more runs in the top of the third inning before pushing the score to 7-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Lehman Catholic (4-5) got a two-run home run in the fifth, before adding a run in each of the next two frames, including a solo homer in the seventh.

Aleigha Jenkins had three singles and drove in a pair of runs, as Rachel Thien and Brenna Homan also had two hits.

Bailee Tebbe, Trisha Gaerke and Homan each had a stolen base.

Olivia Homan got the win, allowing four runs on nine hits. She struck out seven and walked three.

Baseball hangs on

SIDNEY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s baseball team saw its three-run lead cut to just one but held on for a 3-2 victory Friday against Lehman Catholic.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Indians.

After Nick Thwaits staked the Tribe (12-3) to a 3-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning, the Cavaliers responded with two runs in their half inning. A walk, a fielder’s choice and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for LCHS before Jared Magoteaux hit a two-run single.

But Fort Recovery held on to its lead over the next two frames to preserve the winning streak.

Thwaits had a two-run single in the third inning, scoring Riley Post and Ben Homan to give Fort Recovery it’s 2-0 lead before his sac fly in the fifth.

Drew Muhlenkamp earned the win. He gave up one run on two hits in four innings while striking out four and walking three.

Jay roughed up

MIDDLETOWN — The Jay County baseball team got roughed up by the host Shenandoah Raiders on Friday in a 12-2 loss in six innings.

Jay County (3-3) surrendered four runs in the first inning and two in the second before ending the shutout with one run in the third. But Shenandoah responded to take a 9-1 lead into the fourth, and added one more an inning later.

Jay County had five hits, all of which were doubles. Gabe Faulkner, Mitchel Frasher, Payton Heniser, Ethan Myers and Cole Stigleman all had two-base knocks. Stigleman and Faulkner each drove in a run.

Gaven Hare took the loss, as he gave up all four earned runs in the first inning without recording an out. The Patriots used five pitchers total.

Senior Max Moser was 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts, ending his streak of consecutive games reaching base at 26.
