Sonya Wendel

Sonya K. (Payne) Wendel, of Carmel, Indiana, formerly of Redkey, Indiana, passed away peacefully Friday, April 20, 2018, while in the company of family members at her residence.

Sonya was born in Portland, Indiana, on June 7, 1939, a daughter of the late Marianna and Jack Payne. She was a graduate of Redkey High School and also attended Ball State University. Sonya was a devoted wife to Charles A. Wendel who she happily married on Jan. 16, 1960. She was a member of the Democratic Women of Hamilton County, formerly worked as a bookkeeper for Brown, Walker, & Holmes, was a real estate agent for A.H. Graves and enjoyed gardening, camping, sewing and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her loving husband Charles; three sons, Dan Wendel (wife: Francis), Devon Wendel and Dustin Wendel (wife: Kristine); two daughters, Daphne Marks (husband: Shane) and Debrah Curtis (husband: Leslie); one brother, Sam Payne (wife: Jean); 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Kris Rose.

Friends are invited to call Thursday, April 26, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. at MJS Mortuaries – Redkey Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 1 p.m. at MJS Mortuaries – Redkey Chapel with Rusty Piazza officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Redkey, Indiana.
