Defensively, it wasn’t a pretty game.
The Patriots made enough plays on offense to beat their state-line rival.
Jay County High School’s softball team scored seven runs in two separate innings Saturday, cruising to a comfortable 20-12 victory over Fort Recovery in a game that was littered with errors.
Fort Recovery (7-9), which was charged with eight mishaps in the field, scored four times in the second inning to lead 4-1. But Jay County (4-4) responded with its first seven-run inning for an 8-4 advantage.
The Indians scored six times in the fourth inning to go out front 11-10, but their time ahead on the scoreboard was short-lived. Kensey Litton homered as part of a three-run JCHS frame to give the Patriots a lead they never gave up.
Jay County scored seven more times in the sixth inning.
Aubrie Schwieterman had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs for Jay County, which also got a three-hit, three-RBI game from Hannah Phillips. Kady Finnerty and Maggie Pryor also notched a double and two singles.
Macy Day finished with a double and a single for Fort Recovery, and Bailee Tebbe also contributed a double. Aleigha Jenkins had four singles and four RBIs, as Rachel Thien contributed three singles.
Jay second to Tigers
MUNCIE — Jay County’s girls track team finished second to the Yorktown Tigers on Saturday in the Muncie Central Relays.
Yorktown totaled 152 points to win the six-team meet. Jay County scored 112 for second and Delta was third with 88 points.
Freshman Kinsey Shannon recorded the only individual win for the Patriots. She had a time of 1 minute, 1.64 seconds, to beat the field in the 400-meter dash, and teammate Ashlyn Dow was third.
The 4x400 relay team of Grace Saxman, Kendra Muhlenkamp, Renee Omstead and Ashlyn Dow combined to finish first in 4:29.
Also placing in the top three were Calli Stigleman (third – 100 dash), Breea Liette (second – 100 hurdles) and Lucy Laux (second – long jump).
The 4x800 relay team of Sophia Fugiett, Gabby Kunkler, Kendal Garringer and Muhlenkamp was second, while Karlie Bullard, Stigleman, Omstead and Laux were third in the 4x100 relay.
Patriots sweep ’Cats
The Jay County baseball team pushed its winning streak to four games Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the Muncie Central Bearcats.
The Patriots (7-3) took game one 4-3 before a 9-2 win in the second game.
Max Moser hit a single in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one to break a 2-2 tie, and he later scored the eventual game-winning run. The Bearcats got left the potential tying run at third base in the top of the seventh inning.
In game two, Jay County scored eight runs over the first three innings.

Noblesville, which finished fourth at last year’s state finals, won the team title with 299. Muncie Central shot 314 for second, and Union County was third with 339.
Jay County had a team total of 417.
Collin Haines led the Patriots with a 12-over-par 84. Griffin Mann and Devin Harris had matching scores of 102 as they each set new career low scores.
Joey Hall completed the team total with a career-best 129.

The Patriots scored 26 points for sixth. No other team scores were available.
Gavin Randall earned points in two events, as he was runner-up in high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches, and was also sixth in long jump at 17 feet, 11 inches.
Noah Harris finished in 17.5 seconds for fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, and he was also sixth in high jump.
Skyler Myers (3,200 run) and Chad Funk (shot put) both placed fourth.
Stars win tourney
NEW HAVEN — The South Adams junior varsity softball team won the New Haven Tournament on Saturday.
The Starfires scored two runs int he top of the seventh inning to knock off the host Bulldogs 4-3 in the first game before a 5-3 win over Northfield in the championship.
Luke Yoder ended the tournament with three hits and two runs. Nick Miller and Adam Besser each had a double and a single, as Besser contributed two RBIs. James Arnold finished with a double and two RBIs, while Alex Gorney contributed two singles.
Cameron Pogue earned the win in the semifinal, and Arnold pitched the Starfires to the victory in the title game.
Stigleman earned the win in relief in game one, while Noah Arbuckle tossed a complete game for the sweep.
