Marvin A. Towell Sr., age 91, 1383 N. U.S. 27, Portland, passed away Saturday evening at Swiss Village in Berne.
He was born in Randolph County on July 27, 1926, the son of Harold and Vera (Stauffer) Towell. He was married to Mary Jones in 1951 and she died in 1983. He then married Nadine Hoskins in 1985, and she survives.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a 1945 graduate of Bryant High School. He was a member of American Legion Post 777 in Redkey and The Rock Church in Portland. He retired from Indiana Department of Transportation and worked 32 years at Jay County Farm Bureau Co-op. He was a lifetime member of Miami Valley Coin and Relic Hunters Club, Federation of Metal Detector and Archeological Club and Jay County Historical Society.
Surviving are his wife Nadine; one son, M. Allen Towell (wife: Debbie) of Portland; five step-children, Wanda Ballard (husband: Darrell) of Parrish, Florida, Marilyn McCord (husband: Russell) of Fort Wayne, Harold Towell (wife: Sandy) of Portland, Charles Towell of Geneva, and Margaret Lane of Rock Hill, South Carolina; one brother, Elvin Towell of Portland; one half-brother, Roy Emery of Fort Recovery, Ohio; two sisters, Ruth McMichael of Lebanon, Ohio, and Clara Reitenour (husband: George) of Cookeville, Tennessee; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by step-son John Towell
Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Rock Church with Pastor Mark Hinshaw presiding. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bryant with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 211. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. Memorials can be made to the Rock Church or Choice of the Donor.
