FORT WAYNE — Hunter Jarmon was called up a day earlier.
He made the most of his first game with the team.
Jarmon singled to center field, scoring Jalen Washington from third base in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday, giving the Fort Wayne TinCaps a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Dayton Dragons in front of a sellout crowd at Parkview Field.
The TinCaps (18-21, 50-58), who pulled within a half game of a playoff spot with 30 games remaining, entered their last at bats trailing by one.
With runners at first and second and none out, Kelven Melean put down a sacrifice bunt and the subsequent throw to first base sailed into the outfield allowing Aldemar Burgos to score the tying run. Washington moved to third on the play.
With the outfield playing in, Jarmon cranked a fastball to center field, scoring Washington —?he led the team with a pair of hits — and securing the win.
“Looking for a fastball,”?Jarmon, who was called up from the Arizona League Padres on Wednesday, told TinCaps director of media relations John Nolan after the game. “Ended up getting a fastball, threw my hands at it and just trusted my hands. We finally got the win.”
Jack Suwinski got things going for the TinCaps with a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, in the bottom of the first inning.
Suwinski then drove in his third RBI?of the night in the fifth, staking Fort Wayne to a 3-0 lead over Dayton (Cincinnati Reds).
The Dragons (17-22, 49-59) got one run back in the seventh inning before taking the lead with a three-run eighth.
Fort Wayne starter MacKenzie Gore, the No. 2 prospect in the San Diego Padres’ organization, dazzled on the mound. The southpaw tossed five scoreless innings, allowing only a pair of singles and walks while fanning eight batters.
Since Gore returned from the Disabled List on June 10, he’s made 10 starts, struck out 54, walked 14 and turned in a 2.48 ERA?in more than 40 innings.
