John Jay Center for Learning is offering another class in beginning conversational Spanish this fall.
The class will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Aug. 28. and running through Oct. 2.
The six-week course is intended as an introduction to Spanish fundamentals, including basic grammar. It will include common expressions and phrases and social introductions. The instructor is Arturo Octavio Soto, a Ball State University graduate and a native Spanish speaker.
Cost of the class is $85.
Volunteers needed
The Jay County Historical Society is now scheduling volunteers to work the group’s booth in the Round House at the Jay County Fairgrounds during this month’s Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association Show, which is set for Aug. 22 through Aug. 25.
Those interested in volunteering should contact the historical society at (260) 726-7168.
Serving in the historical society booth is a great way to serve as an ambassador for the community.
Messages, fossils
Chad Pregracke’s Message in a Bottle Collection continues to be on exhibit at Minnetrista in Muncie through Sept. 30.
The exhibit showcases messages found in bottles along U.S. shores and was put together by Pregracke, who is founder and president of Living Lands and Waters.
Pegracke will speak on the role of clean water in our communities Aug. 25 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The event is open to the public at no charge. He was named CNN’s 2013 Hero of the Year for his river clean-up efforts.
Also on display is the exhibit Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas.
That exhibit uses technology to examine fossils and learn how dinosaurs walked, ran and moved their long necks. It will be on exhibit through Jan. 6, 2019.

The historical society’s program meeting is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 28.
