The Jay County High School volleyball team got put on the ropes in the second set but prevailed for a sweep of the Madison-Grant Argylls on Tuesday.
The Patriots (4-1), who lost in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament final Saturday and travels to Class 3A No. 2 Delta on Thursday, won 25-15, 28-26, 25-19.
Natalie Miles, a sophomore, led the squad with 10 kills and three blocks, and Hallie Fields was second with seven kills. Sisters Olivia (senior) and Alana (sophomore) Kunkler both had four kills while Sarah Walter contributed three kills.
Kendal Garringer and Kailee Denney had a dozen assists apiece, and Maggie Pryor contributed a pair of aces.
Randi Ferguson tallied 12 digs, as Denney and Walter both had 10.
Jay tennis falls
ALEXANDRIA — The No. 2 doubles team earned the only match win for the Jay County boys tennis team as it fell to the Alexandria-Monroe Tigers, 4-1.
Gavin Randall and Christian Romero teamed for a win at No. 2 doubles, as they knocked off Dylan Clark and Brayden Bates 6-2, 7-5.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Xavier Ninde and Sheldon Upp dropped the first set 6-1 before winning the second 6-3. But Seth Parker and Derek Stinefield grabbed the decisive third set 6-3.
Conner Benter (No. 1 singles) and Gabe Blankenship (No. 2 singles) lost 6-0, 6-0 to Sam Hensley and Avery Paddock respectively. Freshman Crosby Heniser dropped his No. 3 singles match to Trevor Simison 6-1, 6-0.
In junior varsity action, Konner Sommers and Damian Hicks bested Jackson Tatman and Aaron Shields 8-5 as the Patriots fell 3-1.
Bruns medals in loss
ARCANUM, Ohio — Jalyn Bruns shared medalist honors but the Fort Recovery girls golf team lost to the host Arcanum Trojans 217-240 on Tuesday at Beechwood Golf Course.
Bruns, a freshman, led the Indians by tying her career-best score of 50. Shelby Stammen was second on the squad with a 60, while Alli Vaughn and Kendra Dues both carded 65 to complete the Tribe’s team score.
Trisha Gaerke also competed, but her total of 69 did not factor into the team score.
Arcanum’s Lexi Unger tied Bruns for medalist.
Stars drop opener
MARION — The South Adams girls soccer team dropped its season opener on Tuesday, 6-1 to the Marion Giants.
Madi Smith scored the lone goal for the Starfires (0-1), doing so on an assist from Ali Smith.
Jenna Myers had her work cut out for her as goalkeeper. She made 10 saves.
South Adams opens its home schedule at 5 p.m. Thursday against Blackhawk Christian.
