John Jay’s fall speaker series has taken shape.
The series kicks off with a program on human capital and employment growth presented by Michael Hicks, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research and the George and Frances Ball distinguished professor of economics at Ball State University.
Hicks will speak from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6.
On Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Portland’s Jim Waechter, executive director of the Delaware County Historical Society, will present a program on the one hundredth anniversary of World War I.
Then on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Ralph Frazee, director of the Jay County Emergency Management Agency, will discuss that agency’s role.
On Monday, Oct. 22, author and journalist Ruth Dudley Edwards will present a program on succession to the British throne. The program is set for 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Then on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 3:15 p.m., William Robertson, a retired senior scientist at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, will facilitate a program on an ancient Greek device that may have been the earliest computer.
There is no charge for any of the programs, but reservations are required because of limited space.

Members preview
Members of Friends of the Library will be able to get a sneak peek at the Jay County Public Library’s annual used book sale.
The book sale is set for Aug. 23, 24, and 25 to coincide with the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association’s show.
The members only preview sale is set for 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Friends who have paid their dues are eligible, and memberships may be paid that night.
Screenings available
Mercer Health will offer free cancer screenings next month.
Screenings are scheduled for 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 18 and 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at Community Medical Center in Celina, Ohio. The clinic is open to men ages 55 to 75 who do not have an established urology provider or a personal history of prostate cancer.

Let’s dance
Darke County (Ohio) Singles Group will host a dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Aug. 25 at the VFW Hall, 219 N. Ohio St., Greenville, Ohio.
