The Patriots were about as balanced as they could be.

They were able to keep their winning streak alive in the process.

An even attack offensively helped the Jay County High School volleyball team sweep the Winchester Golden Falcons on Tuesday, 25-7, 25-18, 25-15.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Patriots (7-3). 

Natalie Miles and Hallie Fields shared the team high of five kills, and Olivia Kunkler was close behind with four kills. Alana Kunkler contributed three kills to go with her three blocks, which was tops on the squad. Sara Hemmelgarn and Olivia Kunkler also had a pair of stops at the net.

Kendal Garringer set up her teammates to the tune of seven assists, and Kailee Denney added five assists.

Sarah Walter and Alana Kunkler had four aces apiece.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also swept Winchester, 25-23, 25-20. Madison Dirksen led the way with seven kills. Kylie Klopfenstein had four digs and Pacie Denney recorded 11 assists.



FR senior wins

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Chloe Will left 75 runners behind her as she finished first in the Mercer County Meet on Tuesday at Marion Local.

She helped the Indians total 79 points for third out of six teams. Coldwater won the team title with 38 points, and St. Henry was runner-up with 56.

Fort Recovery’s boys scored 106 points for fifth. Parkway (49), St. Henry (56) and Celina (69) were the top three squads.

Will, a senior, crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 42.8 seconds, nearly 30 seconds faster than runner-up Haley Alig of Coldwater.

Also scoring for the Indians were Sarah Siefring (16th), Hanna Metzger (19th), Alyssa Heinrichs (21st) and Anna Wendel (22nd).

Drew Muhlenkamp paced the FR boys as he was seventh in 19:27. Jared Timmerman (15th), Connor Gower (19th), Cameron Romer (26th) and Andy Weitzel (50th) also scored for the Indians.



Tribe wins opener

ST. MARYS, Ohio — The Fort Recovery volleyball team made easy work of the Memorial Roughriders on Tuesday in a 25-7, 25-6, 25-9 sweep to open the season.

Paige Fortkamp led the Indians (1-0) with 14 kills, and Cassy Martin was second on the squad with eight. Martin also had a team-high four blocks.

Hannah Knapke recorded 13 digs, and Madi Rammel notched 17 assists and led her team with four aces.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 25-20, 25-13. Marissa Gaerke paced the offense with 16 kills. Hope Wendel recorded 17 assists and Brenna Homan tallied 10 digs.



Stars beat Panthers

MARION — Shaelynn Bowman totaled 14 kills and Gabriella Bailey nearly hit double digits as well in the South Adams volleyball team’s 25-15, 25-10, 28-26 win over the host Eastbrook Panthers on Tuesday.

Bailey’s nine kills were second to Bowman as the Starfires moved to 7-3 on the year. Carley Sealscott and Lydia Loshe contributed seven and six kills respectively.

Josie Grabau (19 assists) and Bella Bailey (18) shared the setting duties. Sealscott had team highs in both digs (19) and aces (four).

The SAHS junior varsity squad also came out on top against Eastbrook with a 25-16, 25-14 victory.

Savannah Alberson’s five kills were tops on the team, and Jade Baker followed with four kills. Taylor Braun recorded 14 assists, and Baker notched seven digs.



FR is runner-up

SIDNEY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team was the runner-up Tuesday in a three-team match at Shelby Oaks Golf Club.

Botkins won with a total of 181. Fort Recovery shot 192 for second, and host Lehman Catholic was two strokes behind in third.

Grant Knapke fired a 39 to lead the Indians, who also got a 47 from Blayne Tobe. Carson Rammel and Derek Locthefeld completed the team score by carding 52 and 54 respectively.

Zander Kunkler (56) and Jackson Ontrop (67) also competed but they did not factor into the team total.
