A swath of high temperatures was passing through the area more than two decades ago.

The Patriots beat the heat to have career days.

Six runners finished in the top 10, and a total of 10 members of the Jay County High School boys cross country team posted career-best times 25 years ago this week.

Dave Bremer, Josh Miller and Steve Ludy finished second through fourth in helping the JCHS boys total 22 points to beat Bluffton (45) and Adams Central (66).

The Patriot girls didn’t fare so well, as they were third with 51 points. Bluffton won with 32, and Adams Central trailed by four points.

Bremer (18:54), Miller (19:00) and Ludy (19:11) all set career bests. Ryan Kegerreis (sixth – 19:25), Jared Weesner (seventh – 19:46) and Billy Duncan (eighth – 19:48) also had strong performances, as Kegerreis and Duncan had the best runs of their careers.

In the girls race, freshman Julie Lowe pulled away in the second half of the race for a 48-second victory, her second consecutive win. She had a time of 16:52 in the 4K race.

Amy Moser had a time of 19:49 for 10th, giving the Jay County girls a pair of top-10 finishes.

Completing the team score for the Patriot girls were Kerri Evans (12th), Tish Ligget (15th) and Amy Wallischeck (18th).
