The Patriots had gone nearly a week since their last match.

The Rebels provided little resistance.

Jay County High School’s volleyball team moved to 8-3 on the season Monday by sweeping the Randolph Southern Rebels, 25-13, 25-5, 25-13.

Hallie Fields led the offensive attack with eight kills, while Sarah Walter made her full return from an illness to finish second with five kills. Alana Kunkler tallied four, while Sara Hemmelgarn and Natalie Miles had three each.

Fields also posted team highs in digs (11) and aces (five). Madison Dirksen, Kendal Garringer and Maggie Pryor all had four aces, as the Patriots finished with 21 as a team.

Kailee Denney set up the offense to the tune of 18 assists. 

Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 25-4, 23-25, 25-3. Madison Dirksen had seven kills, as Lily Hedges and Madison Jetmore chipped in three kills each.



Tribe golfers fall

CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys and girls golf teams both lost to the Coldwater Cavaliers on Monday at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.

The Tribe boys were at the wrong end of a 188-197 score, while the girls fell 206-232.

Grant Knapke’s round of 46 was the best for the FRHS boys. The Indians also had a sub-50 round from Derek Locthefeld, who finished with 49. Carson Rammel and Zander Kunker both had 51 to complete the team total.

Russel Gehle (60) also competed.

Coldwater’s Carson Muhlenkamp won match medalist with 41.

Jalyn Bruns was the top Fort Recovery girl golfer as she finished with 51. Shelby Stammen shot 57 for second, while Devin Jutte and Trisha Gaerke both shot 62.

Alli Vaughn (66) and Becca Wood (80) did not factor into the team score.

Grace Buschur, Emma Eckstein and Lexi Wright of Coldwater all tied Bruns for match medalist.



Patriot JV loses

A 13-point fourth quarter doomed the Jay County junior varsity football team in a 20-6 loss Monday to Huntington North Vikings.

Jay County (1-1) went ahead 6-0 on a 15-yard touchdown run from Blayne Daniels.

But the Vikings took a 7-6 lead in the second quarter before scoring 13 points in the third quarter for the eventual final score.

Daniels finished with 24 yards rushing, and Quinn Faulkner had two completions for 33 yards, including a 26-yard pass to Kess McBride.

Shawn Fisher picked off a pass and Dylan Knapschafer jumped on a fumble.



Chiefs split

The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams split matches against RJ Baskett on Monday.

The EJMS seventh graders won 25-24, 25-20, and the eighth graders fell 25-14, 25-11.

Sophie Saxman had three kills to lead the seventh graders. She also had three aces. Bralee VanSkyock, Maggie Dillon and Brenna Haines had two kills each. Haines led the squad with nine aces and 10 points.

Madison Brunswick had three kills to lead the eighth grade team in the loss. She also had two aces.

Natalie Wehrly had a pair of digs, while Lauren Brewster collected three assists.
