Municipal elections need to be changed
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Former governors Mitch Daniels, a Republican, and Joe Kernan, a Democrat, both urged that city elections be combined with presidential elections.
Local elections for township and school board are combined with midterm and presidential elections. That is a good process that makes those elections more representative of the voting population because of higher turnout. That process is also good because it saves millions of dollars statewide.
It is time to do as the former governors advocated and combine city elections with other elections, preferably lower-turnout midterm elections. This would make city elections more representative of the voting public but again save millions that the cities could surely use to fix the coming potholes of winter.
