FORT RECOVERY – The Indians started the match on a point streak.

They had to rally to win the second.

In the third, they had to hang on.

No matter what it took, streak is alive and well.

Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team won each set in a different manner Tuesday in sweeping state-line rival Jay County Patriots 25-15, 25-13, 25-23 at Fort Site Fieldhouse.

“I thought the first two games we were alive offensively,” said FRHS coach Chelsea Kahlig, whose team has yet to drop a set on the year, let alone a match. “I give a lot of credit to our passers. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Jay County coach Fred Medler knew his team was in for a battle. He was just glad the Patriots (8-4) were able to put up a fight.

“They’re just good and we knew they were good,” said Medler, whose team hosts Wapahani on Thursday. “It is one of those matches where you just draw a line and see how you play against them.

“Lots of good things happened out there. There were some bad things, but lots of good things.”

Fort Recovery (5-0) jumped on the Patriots early in the opening set thanks to a Paige Jutte kill, back-to-back Brooke Gaerke kills and a Hannah Knapke ace.

Jay County pulled to within two, 9-7, but a Paige Fortkamp kill, Jutte kill, Kierra Wendel ace and Madi Rammel kill made it 13-7. The Patriots never fully recovered.

Jutte was second on the team with 11 kills, trailing only Cassy Martin’s baker’s dozen. Gaerke chipped in seven kills.

“They were in their offense the whole night,” said Medler, whose team struggled to get into its offense in the early going. “We were trying to finagle a way to get here and still have a big block at the net.

“It’s just one of those things where we just have to grow. Hopefully we will.”

Natalie Miles, a sophomore who led Jay County’s offense with 10 kills, fired an attack from the left side for the first point of the second set.

An attack error by Fort Recovery made it 2-0 JCHS before an Olivia Patch kill began a three-point streak to give the Indians the lead again. After trailing by two, the Tribe rattled off 10 of the next 12 points for a 10-4 advantage, forcing Medler into taking a timeout. Later in the set, Martin notched three kills in a stretch of seven straight FRHS points to put the set out of reach.

The Indians never trailed in the third set. Leading 24-19, they weren't able to get the final point as the Patriots trimmed the deficit to just one.

During the run, Alana Kunkler and Hallie Fields both had one of their four kills, and a Martin attack sailed long. Then, Madison Dirksen stopped a Jutte attack made it 24-23.

But a service error ended the match.

“I told (the team) Jay County always brings it,” Kahlig said. “They bring it a few more notches than what they normally would for another team.

“We're kind of a rivalry. We treat that as a (Midwest Athletic Conference) game in a sense because we know they're going to play a little better than what they're capable of.”

Hannah Knapke and Brooke Kahlig reached double-digit dig totals with 13 and 10 respectively.

Along with her 34 assists, Rammel contributed seven kills, most of which came while pushing the ball over the net instead of setting up a teammate.

Each time it caught the Patriots off guard for a kill.

“Madi Rammel had a great game offensively, setting-wise, but she had some really nice kills offensively,” Kahlig said. “For her to do that as a 5-1 setter is pretty impressive.

“It was a great first (home) game atmosphere. The crowd was good and the girls were excited to play on their home court.”

Junior varsity results were not provided.
