Jay wins fourth title

BERNE — The Patriots were on the verge of having a pair of streaks snapped.

They were winners of 12 straight conference games, and had won three consecutive conference titles.

They were in a 2-0 hole after 40 minutes Tuesday against the Starfires.

Kendra Muhlenkamp single-handedly dug her team out of it.

Muhlenkamp scored three goals in the second half, powering the Jay County High School girls soccer team to a 4-2 victory over the South Adams Starfires.

The Patriots (4-2, 3-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) claimed their fourth conference title.

After JCHS trailed 2-0 at the intermission, Mikele Suman cut the South Adams lead in half with her second goal in as many games. Then Muhlenkamp tied it up with her 12th goal of the year. She added two more in the opening 20 minutes of the second half for her fourth hat trick in the last five games.

The senior has 14 goals in six games.

Hannah Phillips, Karlie Bullard and Suman all notched assists for Jay County.

Anna Nussbaum netted the first goal for South Adams (2-3, 0-1 ACAC) on a direct free kick in the 17th minute. Kristen Wynn put the Starfires on top 2-0 in the 25th minute.



Jay second, FR third

Jay County’s girls golf team finished second in a three-way meet with the Winchester Golden Falcons and Fort Recovery Indians on Tuesday at Portland Golf Club.

Winchester totaled 213 for first place, beating Jay County by six strokes. Fort Recovery totaled 229 for third.

Eden Basford led the Patriots by shooting 52. Mackenzie Parks was one stroke behind, and Erika Heitkamp totaled 56. Sierra Caster finished with 58.

Jalyn Bruns paced the Indians with a 51. Shelby Stammen and Alli Vaughn had matching scores of 59, and Devin Jutte completed the team score with 60.

Also competing for Jay County was Kassidy Fennig (64), and Becca Wood (63) and Kendra Dues (64) also played for Fort Recovery.

In junior varsity action, Jay County defeated Fort Recovery 245-270. Individual scores were not provided.



Stars fall to Panthers

ROCKFORD, Ohio — The South Adams volleyball team dropped a back-and-forth match to the host Parkway Panthers on Tuesday, 14-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11.

Shaelynn Bowman had a career-high 16 kills for South Adams (8-5). Carlie Sealscott was second on the team with 10 kills, and Lydia Loshe contributed nine kills.

Bella Bailey collected 30 assists, and Hannah Dull chipped in 29 digs. Bowman also had five blocks.

South Adams’ junior varsity team won, 19-25, 25-11, 25-12.

Savannah Alberson led the way with five kills and three blocks. Poppi Lenwell added four kills, and she shared the team-high of three aces with Aaliyah Feaster.



Golfers beat Bluffton

BLUFFTON — Shayla Welch shared match medalist honors in leading the South Adams girls golf team to a 219-229 win over the host Bluffton Tigers.

Welch shot 51, tying Kenya Moore of Bluffton.

Millie Gaskill was second on the team with 55, and Maggie Evans was one stroke behind. Katie Stiltner completed the team score for South Adams by carding a 57.

Hannah Hinshaw also competed, but her 73 did not factor into the team total.



Jay 7th loses

The Jay County middle school seventh grade football team lost to the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday, 20-6.

The eighth graders won a two-quarter exhibition, 20-0.

Sean Carpenter had the lone touchdown for the Jay County seventh graders (1-1, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference), scoring on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. He finished with 58 rushing yards. Sam Myers was second on the team with 46 rushing yards.

Carpenter also led the team with five tackles.

Carter Link scored two touchdowns for the eighth graders. Owen Ransom also scored a TD. Brady Davis kicked a two-point PAT.



SA blanks Raiders

PONETO — South Adams’ middle school football team shut out the Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday, 26-0.

Maverick Summersett rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard scamper in the first quarter.

Brady Beall and Owen Wanner each added rushing TDs.

Defensively, Hunter Kongar, Gavin Myers and Esmael Rodriguez all recovered fumbles.
