Portland Fire Department responded to a house fire Monday night.
Firefighters were called at 5:40 p.m. to 5314 W. Indiana 67, Portland, for a report of a house on fire. It was under control by 6:09 p.m., with the job completed by 7:34 p.m.
Two trucks and 19 firefighters responded, and were assisted by Redkey and Dunkirk fire departments and Jay Emergency Medical Service.
The house is owned by Neil Habegger. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Backing accident
A Portland woman backed her car into a LifeStream Services bus Monday in the Family Practice of Jay County parking lot.
Linda K. Stewart, 70, was backing her 2004 Oldsmobile out of parking space at the practice, 428 W. Votaw St., Portland. She told Portland Police Department she did not see the LifeStream bus, which was parked behind her car.
The bus is registered to Lifestream Services, Yorktown.
Damage in the 11:47 a.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Swideswipe
A Portland man sideswiped a parked vehicle with his truck Monday.
James A. Armstrong, 33, was driving his 2006 Ford 350 West on Walnut Street near its intersection with Commerce Street when he struck the side of a parked 2011 Chevrolet Silverado.
The Silverado is registered to Gary L. Hendershot, Geneva.
Damage in the 12:23 p.m. collision is estimated to be less than $1,000.
Drove off road
A Portland woman sustained minor injuries when she drove her car off the road Monday afternoon.
Katie G. Holcomb, 21, was driving west on county road 400 South approaching its intersection with U.S. 27. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office the brakes on her 2002 Chevrolet Suburban locked up, causing her vehicle to enter the ditch on the north side of the road. The Chevrolet then went across U.S. 27, striking a road sign before coming to rest in the ditch on the west side of U.S. 27.
Holcomb was treated at the scene for pain in her lower leg.
Damage in the 1:20 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Horse, car collision
A Bryant woman was involved in an accident with a horse-drawn vehicle early Monday morning.
Martha J. Miller, 79, was driving her 2013 Ford Taurus east on county road 800 North near its intersection with county road 250 East. According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, a horse-drawn vehicle driven by Samuel W. Wickey went left of center, causing the horse to strike Miller’s car. Wickey, 23, Geneva, was traveling west on county road 800 North.
The horse was injured in the accident.
Damage in the 1:02 a.m. collision is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Vehicle fire
Redkey Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire Saturday.
Firefighters were called at 9:46 p.m. to the area of W. 800 South and S. 400 West in Ridgeville. Jake Boolman said he had smelled smoke while driving, and when he pulled the vehicle over it caught on fire.
Trailer stolen
A trailer was reportedly stolen from a Portland business recently.
According to a Portland Police Department report, a 2013 Diamond 22-foot tilt trailer was taken from IOM Grain, 974 E. 100 North, Portland. The trailer is valued at $5,000 and was taken from the business’s back lot sometime between Nov. 24 and Friday.
Dog struck
A Portland man hit a dog with his car Monday night, causing an estimated $1,000 to $2,500 in damage.
Michael D. Peterson, 70, was driving east on Indiana 67 near its intersection with county road 1250 West when a dog ran into the roadway. He was unable to avoid hitting it with his 2016 Kia Sorento.
The collision occurred at 9:02 p.m.
