Robert Wherry

Robert Dale Wherry Sr., age 92, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, in Crown Pointe of Portland.

He was born in Portland on Feb. 11, 1926, the son of Kenneth and Mildred Tharp (Herrman) Wherry. He was married June 23, 1951, to Donna VanMatre, who survives.

He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and 1944 Portland High School graduate. He was owner and operator of City Cigar Store in Portland for over 65 years.

He attended Fellowship Baptist Church and was member of Portland Elks, Portland Moose, American Legion Post #211, Portland Country Club and Hickory Hills Country Club.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Donna; two daughters, Connie Irwin (husband: Tim) and Jama Pensinger (husband: Guy) both of Portland; four grandchildren, Lacey Ninde (husband: Dan), Keia Wood (husband: Joe), Cale Hearn (wife: Dia) and Corey LeMaster; seven great-grandchildren, Xavier, Maebry, Spencer, Jacob, Cooper, Ashlynn and Madalynn.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Wherry Jr.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Hugh Kelly presiding. Visitation will be prior to the services from noon to 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Green Park Cemetery.

Baird-Freeman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
