MUNCIE — The Patriots snapped its second three-game losing streak in a big way.
Five players scored in double figures, including two who notched career highs, as the Jay County High School girls basketball team beat the Muncie Central Bearcats on Tuesday, 72-41.
The Patriots (3-6), who host Allen County Athletic Conference rival Adams Central on Friday, tallied 20 or more points in each of the first three quarters. They led 20-9 after one and 45-21 at halftime before taking a 67-35 advantage into the final period.
Shelby Caldwell led the team with 19 points while Kendra Muhlenkamp and Hanna Dillon totaled 14 points apiece. Caldwell and Dillon both hauled in 10 rebounds as Dillon had a career night scoring and on the glass.
Hallie Fields set a career high by scoring 11 points, and Madison Dirksen contributed 10 points as she reached double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in her career.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 42-23. Pacie Denney had a team best 17 points, and Grace Saxman followed with 10 points.
Streak ends
CONVERSE — Jay County’s girls swim team had its dual meet winning streak come to a close on Tuesday with a 105-78 loss to the host Oak Hill Golden Eagles.
It was the Patriots’ first loss since Jan. 10, 2016.
Jay County’s boys also lost Tuesday, 114-71.
Vivienne Kunkler and Eliza Bader had the only individual wins for the JCHS girls. Kunkler won the 100-yard breaststroke, and Bader was first in the 100 butterfly.
Bader and Kunkler joined Rieley Brewster and Ashlyn Dow to win the 200 medley relay, then Bader, Kunkler and Dow teamed with Erica Hathaway for a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.
Skyler Myers was first in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, leading a sweep of the top three spots in the former.
Chase McFarland, Tayler Smeltzer, Kyle Sanders and Myers combined to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Chiefs win big
MUNCIE — East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both thrashed the host Southside Panthers on Monday.
The eighth grade Chiefs (6-1) picked up a 31-7 victory while the seventh graders (5-1) had a 32-14 triumph.
Renna Schwieterman led the eighth graders with 18 points and Lydia Keihn followed with 10 points. Laci McGinnis and Maggie Dillon had two and one point respectively.
Sophie Saxman scored 13 points and Bralee VanSkyock contributed 11 points to lead the seventh grade Chiefs. Breanna Dirksen tallied three points while Bella Denton and Cash Hollowell had two points apiece.
