Mike Wendel

Mike P. Wendel, 75, Berne, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at IU Health Jay. He was a former Portland resident. 

Mike was born on Sept. 12, 1943, in Portland, the son of Serphin “Turk” and Virginia Olive (Snyder) Wendel. He graduated from Portland High School in 1961. Mike married Barbara Ann Hanke on March 31, 1973, and she passed away on Feb. 28, 2016. 

Mike worked for Dunbar Furniture in Berne and Armstrong Mold in Winchester, and retired from Jay School Corporation as a custodian.

He was a member of Collett Church of the Nazarene. Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandchildren at Tippy and Lake Pleasant. Mike was an avid Indiana University athletics fan and could often be found during the summer at the Berne Public Pool. 

Survivors include:

Three sons — Michael Brandon Wendel (wife: Shenelle), Portland, Charles E. Wendel (wife: Sarina), Portland, and Justin A. Wendel (wife: Brenda), Berne 

One daughter — Alisa A. Blount (husband: Ryan), Portland 

One brother — Charles A. Wendel, Carmel 

Thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home in Portland. 

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home in Portland. Burial will follow in Green Park Cemetery.
