UNION CITY, Ohio — Friday the Indians pulled to .500 for the season.
Saturday they moved above it.
The Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team had a strong fourth quarter on both ends of the court in a 51-35 victory over the host Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks
The Tribe (9-8) is above .500 for the first time in five games.
After heading into the second quarter trailing 11-8, the Indians and Blackhawks were tied at 22 at half and 33 after three quarters. Fort Recovery outscored Mississinawa Valley 18-2 in the final eight minutes to get the victory.
Payton Jutte scored a game-high 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Clay Schmitz was second on the team with a dozen points while Ryan Braun and Cade Wendel both had eight points.
Indians top ’Hawks
UNION CITY, Ohio — A strong defensive effort carried the Fort Recovery girls basketball team to a 53-23 clubbing of the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks on Saturday afternoon.
The Division IV No. 8 Indians (14-3) jumped to a 12-3 advantage after the first quarter before pushing the score to 26-9 at half. The lead ballooned to 39-14 after three quarters of play.
Senior Grace Thien led the Indians with 14 points and Val Muhlenkamp followed with 11 points to go with her six rebounds. Brooke Kahlig, Alli Vaughn and Thien had four rebounds apiece.
Kahlig was third on the team with seven points and Macy Day contributed six points.
Jay tumblers fourth
MARION — Jay County’s gymnastics team finished fourth Saturday at the Marion Invitational.
Homestead won the eight-team invitational with a score of 108.9. McCutcheon totaled 104.725 for second and Northrop was third with 100.5. Jay County scored 98.475.
Karlie Bullard was the lone JCHS gymnast to crack the top eight. She was seventh in uneven bars with 8.45. Her highest score was an 8.6 on balance beam, and she also had 8.55 on vault and 8.4 on floor exercise. Her all-around score of 34 points was eighth.
Kenzie Ring’s all-around score of 33.5 was 12th out of 24 competitors. Her best score came on bars (8.625) and she scored 8.55 on vault. She earned 8.3 on floor and 8.025 on beam.
