FORT RECOVERY — At times this season the Indians haven’t played too well offensively.
Tuesday was not one of those times.
The Bulldogs, who were in an early hole, simply couldn’t catch up.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team had three players score 17 or more points in a season-high offensive output Tuesday in a 63-40 victory over the Celina Bulldogs at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
“We stress a lot, taking good shots,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose Division IV No. 8 Indians moved to 16-4 ahead of a showdown Thursday against fourth-ranked Minster. “I think we did that for the most part. We have a few poor shots here and there but since we have struggled every now and then it’s the idea of trying to get a good shot every single time so we have a better chance at hitting those.
“It’s nice we can come out and put up 63 on the board.”
Senior Grace Thien was a catalyst for the Tribe offensive onslaught as the senior made five 3-pointers after missing her first six shots from long range. Her first make from behind the arc was a swish from the right wing to end the first half and give the Indians a 29-12 lead.
“She had some great looks in the first quarter or two,” Patch said. “Just missed some of them. We ran an out-of-bounds play for her, she saw it go through the hoop. I think it helped her out confidence wise.”
Thien made four 3-pointers in the third quarter, twice trading triples with the Bulldogs (2-19) as they tried to cut into the deficit.
“I wish we would have played the first half like that,” said Celina assistant coach Kylee Bader, who filled in for an ailing Brandon Steinke. Celina was 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from the field in the first half and 11-of-22 in the final 16 minutes.
“I don’t know what it was but I was glad to see us try to fight back and get back in this.”
After finally getting its offense together and hitting shots, Celina still wasn’t able to cut into the deficit too much. It trailed by as many as 23 early in the third quarter and trimmed the margin to 17 with 2:14 to play. Despite the Bulldogs being at their best offensively, the Indians were just as apt at finding the bottom of the hoop as they had a 22-19 edge in scoring during the period.
Thien finished with a game-high 21 points. Val Muhlenkamp and Carley Stone both contributed 17 points, which marked a new season high for the former.
But despite the 23-point win, Patch was disappointed his team lapsed at times during the second half after surrendering just two points in the first quarter.
“Gave up easy buckets in transition,” Patch said. Celina also caught fire from 3-point range as all six of its makes from behind the arc came in the second half. “Lost men, didn’t talk on defense as well as we needed to. Effort on the glass wasn’t very good at times. Just a game we were going through the motions here and there.
“As coaches those are frustrating. From the kids’ standpoint they might have been looking ahead a little bit but those are things you can’t do. Learn and move on.”
Stone got off to a great start, scoring half of the Tribe’s 16 first-quarter points. She opened the scoring on a put back of a Thien missed triple, then scored on a fast break following a Celina turnover. The next time down the court, she assisted on a Thien jumper from the free-throw line. Later in the quarter, she had a basket from the left elbow and another fast break layup.
“I don’t think we were ready,” Bader said. “We just looked not on our feet ready to play at all.”
Lauren Johnson and Emily Braun both scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, who have lost four straight.
Junior varsity
The Indians didn’t score in the fourth quarter.
They were so far ahead it wasn’t too big of a deal.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team kept Celina off the scoreboard in the second quarter in a 31-18 victory over Celina.
The Indians (17-2) led by one after the first quarter but held a 12-0 margin in the second to lead 19-6 at halftime. They pushed the advantage to 31-11 with one quarter to play and weren’t affected by the fact they were held without a point for the final seven minutes.
Hope Wendel led the Indians with nine points as Macey Day and Paige Fortkamp followed with seven and six points respectively. Brenna Homan was fourth on the team with four points.
