HERROD, Ohio — The Bulldogs didn’t provide much fight.
They didn’t shoot well, went nearly 13 minutes without a field goal and hardly challenged for rebounds.
Basically, all they did was provide a little bit of a workout and delayed the inevitable — the Indians cutting down the nets.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team dominated nearly every facet of the game Saturday in a 59-16 victory over the Ada Bulldogs in the Division IV Wapakoneta District sectional final at Allen East.
“Effort and execution is kind of what we talked about all week,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose eighth-ranked and No. 2 seed Indians advance to the district semifinal against No. 5 seed Ridgemont at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Wapakoneta. The Golden Gophers knocked off No. 4 seed St. Henry 48-44 in the first sectional final.
“Make sure that we came out, had a good start and not going through the motions, being prepared and ready to play and I thought we did a good job of that tonight,” Patch added.
Oh were the Indians (18-5) ready.
They were out front 7-2 early before Ada’s Maddie Gossard hit a triple from the right wing to put the deficit to two points. At that point the Tribe started rolling.
Grace Thien responded with a 3-pointer on a Kierra Wendel assist to kick off a Fort Recovery run of 27 straight points that lasted well into the second quarter. Thien, who had a total of five 3-pointers to add to her record-setting season, scored nine points during the run, and Val Muhlenkamp added seven points.
“We knew with their zone that we’d be able to get some really good looks, some good ball movement and (we) took advantage of that,” said Patch, whose team has won three consecutive sectional titles.
Thien was 5-of-12 from behind the 3-point line and each shot was uncontested. She pushed her season and career 3-point records to 72 and 185 respectively.
“She, I think, was throwing it a little bit versus shooting it,” Patch said. “For her, kind of had a bad shooting day for her standards (and) what she’s been doing.”
Thien finished with 18 points.
Ada (5-18) had 11 turnovers and missed eight shots during the Tribe’s lengthy run. Anney Archer split a pair of free throws to end the streak, but the Indians responded with seven more points and a 41-6 lead.
Teara Coulson drained a 3-pointer from the wing with 41.5 seconds remaining before intermission, ending a stretch of 12 minutes, 47 seconds, that the Bulldogs went without a field goal.
With a continuous clock in the second half — the OHSAA implemented a rule this season that if a team leads by 35 points after halftime the clock continues to run until the advantage dips below 30 — Ada managed only seven more points for the game. Two of those were in the third quarter when FRHS senior Carley Stone tipped a rebound into her team’s basket.
Fort Recovery shot 24 percentage points better than Ada, had a two-to-one edge in rebounds and forced 17 Bulldog turnovers compared to eight giveaways.
Muhlenkamp had a game-high 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds — six on each end of the floor — to lead the Indians.
“I thought Val did a good job of finishing inside as well,” Patch said. “We got her the ball in the short corner stuff. She was able to finish well.”
The Indians also had nearly as many offensive rebounds (15) as the Bulldogs had total boards (21).
“We thought that was something we could do was be able to hit the glass,” said Patch, who cleared his bench midway through the third quarter. “On film we didn’t think they boxed out real well and we knew we could be aggressive in trying to get to the glass.”
Archer’s six points were a team-high for Ada.
