DECATUR — The Patriots began the new year with a victory.
The boys team dropped its first meet of 2018.
Jay County High School’s girls and boys swim teams split a meet with host Bellmont on Tuesday.
The JCHS girls won all 12 events in a 125-51 win, and the boys fell 105-75.
Ashlyn Dow and Alex Bader both had two victories. Dow took first in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke as Bader won the 100 freestyle and also led a sweep in the 50 freestyle.
Mackenzie Knisley (diving), Elizabeth McDowell (200 individual medley), Eliza Bader (100 butterfly), Erica Hathaway (500 freestyle) and Rieley Brewster (100 backstroke) also had individual wins.
Dow, McDowell and the Baders teamed to win the 200 medley relay; Lilly Clemmons, Alex Bader, Brewster and Dow combined for a victory in the 200 freestyle; and Eliza Bader, McDowell, Hathaway and Brewster earned a win in the 400 freestyle relay.
Winners for the boys were Chase McFarland (500 freestyle), Garrett Campbell (100 backstroke) and Alex LeMaster (100 breaststroke).
Mitchell Brown, Reid Claycomb, Justice Murphy and Cameron Henry combined for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay.
Dellinger sets record
BERNE — Playing on her home court, Lexi Dellinger became the program’s all-time leading scorer as the South Adams girls basketball team lost 64-38 Tuesday to the Bellmont Squaws.
Dellinger finished with 15 points, surpassing 1997 graduate Athena Sherwood’s total of 1,124 points.
South Adams (8-7) fell behind 13-6 after the first quarter and trailed 31-21 at halftime. The Squaws (13-3) doubled up the Starfires, 48-24, after three quarters before building on the lead in the final eight minutes.
Madi Wurster contributed 12 points in support of Dellinger, and Sydney Pierce had six points.
Dellinger, who sits at 1,126 points, can build on her record as the Starfires are guaranteed at least eight more games this season.
The South Adams junior varsity team also lost, 37-28. Taylor Augsburger led the Stars with 11 points.
Hot start carries FR
FORT RECOVERY — A hot start carried the Fort Recovery girls basketball team to a 54-43 victory Tuesday over St. Marys Roughriders.
The Indians (6-1) jumped out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and led 29-20 at half. Fort Recovery pushed the advantage to 44-31 after three quarters on the way to its fifth consecutive win.
Carley Stone was on fire, making seven of her eight field goals and all but one of her six free throws on her way to a game-high 19 points. Kiah Wendel joined Stone in double figures with 14 points, and Val Muhlenkamp chipped in six points to go with her game-high seven rebounds.
Olivia Patch grabbed five boards and Grace Thien hauled in four rebounds.
