Meler exhibit to begin Friday

A new exhibit will begin Friday in the Hugh N. Ronald Gallery at Arts Place.
Printmaker Monika Meler will have the exhibit How the Present Rearranges the Past, featuring large colorful prints on semi-transparent Japanese paper that reflects her memories as a child immigrant from Poland.
Meler is an assistant professor of art atUniversity of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Arts Place is currently accepting proposals for 2019 art exhibits. Artists from Ohio, Kentucky, Indianaand Illinois are invited to send innovative proposals to display 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional work for solo or group shows.
Applicants must send 10 images of recent work completed in the last two years, including detailed information with each image (title, medium, dimensions, date completed, etc.), a description of the proposed exhibition, a current resume and an artist statement. Proposals are due by Feb. 4.

West Jay Middle School named its Students of the Month for December.
In sixth grade was Mollie Hines, the daughter of Keri Hines.
In seventh grade was Grace Shimp, the daughter of Richard and Jodie Shimp.
In eighth grade was Loretta Eicher, the daughter of Toby and Rosa Eicher.
Sherman to exhibit
An author who lived in Nigeria will have an exhibition in Indianapolis in February.
Indianapolis writer and photographer John Sherman will present “Nigeria On My Mind” beginning Feb. 2 at the Harrison Center for the Arts, 1505 N. Delaware St.
Sherman lived in Nigeria as a Peace Corps volunteer teacher in 1966 and 1967 and as a member of an International Committee of the Red Cross food/medical team in 1968 and 1969 during the Nigeria/Biafra Civil War.
He will be displaying photos, Nigerian chief’s regaliaand war-time ephemera. A video of the opera “Biafra” will also be shown and Sherman will share excerpts from his book “War Stories: A Memoir of Nigeria and Biafra.”
Sherman recently was able to return to Nigeria, in part through a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund, to visit places where he had lived and worked and to present the paper “The Use of Artistic Works in Conflict Resolution” at the Igbo Studies Association annual conference in Owerri.
