COLDWATER, Ohio — All 14 Patriots finished with winning records Saturday.

So did the squad.

Jay County High School’s wrestling team only had 12 total defeats Saturday as it went 4-1 in the Coldwater Invitational.

The Patriots (15-4) knocked off the Van Wert Cougars 69-11, Delphos Jefferson Wildcats 77-0 and Celina Bulldogs 62-15. Jay County also had an 81-0 victory over a team made up of junior varsity wrestlers to take the place of a school that was unable to travel because of weather.

Jay County lost to the host Cavaliers, 42-26.

Zakk Atkins, Ian Liette, Mason Winner and Gaven Hare were each 5-0 on the day, with Lucas Schmit winning all four of his matches too.

Lita Chowning, Tayler Klarer, Garrett Mann, Thomas Hemmelgarn, Chandler Chapman, Dawson Frasher and Nathanael Lykins all finshed 4-1 for the tournament, while Rylee Huftel and Jordan Schricker both went 3-2.

Jay County returns to the mat Tuesday as it hosts the Fort Wayne North Side Legends at the JCHS auditorium for senior night. 



Tribe girls third

CELINA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls swim team placed third Saturday in the Celina Lions Invitational at Auglaize Mercer YMCA.

Celina was first out of 17 teams with 412 points. Ottawa Glandorf was second with 307 points, and the Indians totaled 254 points for third.

Alexis Bubp earned the only individual victory, placing first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 9.07 seconds. She was also fourth in the 100 butterfly.

Bubp joined her sister Ava Bubp, Paige Fortkamp and Cassy Martin to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.46.

Sophie Timmerman was second and third respectively in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Martin was runner-up in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke while Paige Fortkamp finished fifth in the 50 freestyle. Ava Bubp placed third in the 200 individual medley.

Alexis Bubp, Martin, Timmerman and Fortkamp combined to finish second in the 200 medley relay, while Ava Bubp, Kyra Clark, Timmerman and Fortkamp were third in the 400 freestyle relay.



Stars rout Raiders

BLUFFTON — Two players eclipsed the 20-point scoring plateau as the South Adams boys basketball team routed the Southern Wells Raiders 76-43 Saturday in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament semifinal at Bluffton.

The Starfires (4-7), who snapped a three-game losing streak, fell behind 10-9 after the first quarter but exploded for a 25 points in the second to take a 34-21 lead into halftime.

South Adams continued to outscore the Raiders (2-9) in the final 16 minutes.

Kody Fike was 10-of-16 from the field to finish with a game-high 22 points. He also led all players with 11 rebounds for the double-double as SAHS had a 31-15 edge on the glass.

James Arnold made all three of his 3-point attempts on his way to 21 points and was second on the team with seven points to go with a career-high nine assists.

Lars In’t Groen contributed eight points, and David Muselman chipped in five points.



East Jay splits invite

The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams were both 1-1 Saturday in the invitational it hosted.

The eighth grade team beat Bellmont 53-31 before losing to 49-38, while the seventh graders had a 59-24 win over Bellmont and a 41-32 loss to Monroe Central.

Gaven Muhlenkamp paced the EJMS eighth graders (9-3) with 22 points over the two games. Ethan Dirksen totaled 19 points, and Mickey Waters contributed 13 points. Adam Muhlenkamp finished with 11 points as Tarron Bentz chipped in nine points.

Bennett Weitzel poured in 26 points to lead the seventh grade Chiefs (8-4). Carter Link was second on the team with 12 points, and Pete Muhlenkamp was third with 11 points. Blake Bogenschutz and Brady Davis had eight points apiece.



Miles places 7th

COVINGTON, Ky. — Courtney Miles placed seventh Saturday in the Coaches’ Spectacular gymnastics meet at Northern Kentucky Convention Center.

Miles, a Jay County High School senior, totaled 32.725 points as a Level 9 senior gymnast. Halle Hill, a JCHS sophomore, was eighth in the same division with 31.2 points.

Miles scored 8.6 to finish fourth on uneven bars. It was her best score of the day. She was also 10th on floor exercise (8.575) and 11th on both vault (8.525) and balance beam (7.025).

Hill was seventh on floor (8.775), eighth on beam (7.775) and 12th on vault (8.6). She totaled 6.05 on bars.



Chiefs 2-1

DECATUR — East Jay’s wrestling team opened its season Saturday by going 2-1 at the Bellmont Triple Dual.

The Chiefs knocked off Cowan 45-36 and beat Blackhawk Christian 73-18. Their only loss was a 67-24 setback to Bellmont.

Tony Wood (75-pound weight class), Dyllan Garringer (90 pounds) and Connor Specht (175 pounds) were all 3-0 on the day.
