The Patriot girls won every event.

The boys came up a little short.

Jay County High School’s swim teams split a meet with the Muncie Central Bearcats on Tuesday.

The JCHS girls had a 214-79 victory while the boys fell 173-141.

Eliza Bader, Ashlyn Dow and Alex Bader each won a pair of races for the Patriot girls. Eliza Bader was first in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle, Dow finished ahead of the field in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke while Alex Bader handled the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke events.

Lilli Clemmons (200 individual medley) and Elizabeth McDowell (50 freestyle) each won their respective events.

Erica Hathaway, Clemmons, Dow and McDowell teamed for a victory in the 200 medley relay. Vivienne Kunkler, Hathaway and the Baders joined to win the 200 freestyle relay as the 400 freestyle relay team of Rieley Brewster, Dow and the Baders finished first.

Garrett Campbell won the 50 and 100 freestyle races for the JCHS boys, who also got a victory from Tayler Smeltzer in the 100 butterfly. Chase McFarland, Alex Lemaster, Smeltzer and Campbell teamed for a victory in the 200 medley relay.



Martin sets record

MUNCIE — Cassy Martin set another school record Tuesday, helping the Fort Recovery girls swim teams to victories over the Burris Owls and the host Delta Eagles.

The Indians defeated Delta 59-43, and knocked off Burris 57-43.

Martin, a junior, swam to a time of 2 minutes, 22.62 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley for a new school record, beating teammate Alexis Bubp’s time of 2:23.69. It was the fourth broken record for Martin this year.

Bubp won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events, and Martin also claimed first in the 100 freestyle.

Ava Bubp (500 freestyle) and Sophie Timmerman (100 breaststroke) also won their respective events.

The Tribe’s 200 medley relay team of Paige Fortkamp, Alexis Bubp, Ava Bubp and Martin finished first, as Ava Bubp, Kyra Clark, Fortkamp and Timmerman got a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.



Patriots stumble

OSSIAN — The Jay County girls basketball team got off to a great start but stumbled in the second half on Tuesday in a 69-52 loss to the host Norwell Knights.

The Patriots (12-8) had a 19-7 lead after the first quarter but saw the lead trimmed to just 27-23 at halftime. The Knights (14-5), who were 13th in the most recent Class 3A Associated Press poll, scored 23 points in each of the third and fourth quarters for its fourth consecutive win.

Hanna Ault led the Patriots with 21 points and six rebounds, as Kendra Muhlenkamp was second on the team with 11 points.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 48-25. Claire Dirksen led the Patriots (13-4) with nine points and Pacie Denney contributed eight points.



C team falls

SELMA — Jay County’s boys basketball C team fell to the host Wapahani Raiders on Tuesday, 39-25.

The loss drops the Patriots to 3-6 on the year.

Jay County went into the second quarter leading 11-8 but fell behind 20-16 at half. It was never able to catch up to the Raiders in the second half as it managed just nine points over the final two periods.

Gavin Lambert led the Patriots with a dozen points, 10 of which came in the first quarter. Conner Tout was second on the squad with eight points, as Peyton Nichols and Javon Alexander both scored two points. Sheldon Upp chipped in a free throw.
