FORT RECOVERY — The Tigers were too tenacious on defense.
It forced the Indians to play too fast.
As two of the top teams in the state in their respective divisions clashed for a stranglehold on the conference standings Thursday, it was the higher-ranked team that proved its worth.
The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team was forced out of rhythm and struggled offensively Thursday in a 44-30 Midwest Athletic Conference loss to the Versailles Tigers at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
“They did a good job of ball pressure and bodying up and we didn’t respond to that very well,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch, whose Division IV No. 10 Indians team had their 10-game winning streak snapped. “We felt we had a good game plan coming in. We just weren’t executing.
“We’re a good team that doesn’t like to play a high-paced game. We like to play a lower-paced game.”
The Tigers (15-1, 6-0 MAC), who are the second-ranked team in Division III, prevented the Indians (11-2, 4-1 MAC) from getting into their offense from the onset. Fort Recovery missed its first four shots of the game, while the Tigers scored the first seven points and never trailed.
“We play more possession-style and because of that we get good looks,” Patch said. “We run a good offense and we take our time. Because of that we shoot a high percentage.”
But again, the Tigers defense didn’t allow the Tribe to get many good looks. Often, it had to force shots from the perimeter. In other instances, attempts from close range were contested by two or more Tigers.
Fort Recovery managed just four points in the second quarter and trailed 27-11 as it was 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from the field in the first half.
“Instead, this game I think we were (shooting a low percentage) because we weren’t running an offense,” Patch said. The Indians finished 13-of-40 (32.5 percent) for the game. “Versailles, they were making us play a lot faster than we wanted to play. They try to speed you up.
“We talked, we have to be able to play under control and we didn’t do that at all.”
As a result, the Indians finished with 21 turnovers.
At the other end of the floor, the Indians had difficulty containing Danielle Winner. The 6-foot, 2-inch senior forward dominated the post, scoring 16 points with a dozen rebounds.
She tallied all of her six first-half points in the second quarter, putting back an offensive board, making a jumper from the right baseline and scoring on an assist from Hailey McEldowney.
“She didn’t really score a ton off of half-court offense,” Patch said. Winner had five offensive rebounds. “Her stuff was off of rebounds more so than anything, and then us scrambling a little bit.”
Fort Recovery managed to tame the Tigers during the third quarter in limiting them to just two points, but on the flipside they weren’t able to trim the deficit much as it was 29-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
“The problem is every time we got a stop we came down and got a turnover,” Patch said. “It’s hard to get back in a game and go on runs if you can’t get stops and you can’t score.”
Senior Grace Thien led the Indians with 14 points, all but two of which came in the second half. She had three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as she desperately tried to keep her team in contention for first place in the MAC standings.
“She has been struggling shooting the ball a little bit but she came out tonight when we needed it,” Patch said.
Thien also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Olivia Patch chipped in six points as Kiah Wendel and Val Muhlenkamp had four points apiece.
“Their pressure just bothered us tonight and I don’t think we played very strong and physical and it kind of took us out of the game,” Patch said.

Brenna Homan drained a go-ahead jumper in the final minute and Brooke Kahlig came up with a crucial steal as Fort Recovery rallied to beat Versailles, 32-31.
Fort Recovery trailed 11-6 after the first quarter but went into the locker room with an 18-17 lead. The Tigers jumped out front again, 27-23, heading into the final seven minutes before Homan and Kahlig had their late-game heroics.
Homan led all players with 10 points, and Alli Vaughn was second on the Tribe with eight points. Paige Fortkamp tallied five points as Macy Day and Hope Wendel finished with three points apiece.
