Katy Smeltzer closed out the regular season in a standard fashion.

A national standard, that is.

Smeltzer, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, earned three NAIA national B standards Saturday for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team in a meet with Asbury College.

The junior was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.12 seconds to earn her first national cut of the day. She followed that effort with a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle in 56.37 seconds. Teammate Houston Burgoon was first in both races.

Her third national standard came in the 200 freestyle as she was third in 2 minutes, 4.98 seconds.

In all, the UC Patriots earned 19 national cuts ahead of the Feb. 1 Mid-South Conference Championships.

Jay County – 2013

Posted a career-high point total for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team on Wednesday as it defeated Aquinas, 90-81.

The senior was 9-of-10 from the field and a flawless 4-for-4 from the free-throw line for 22 points, leading a Warrior charge of five players to reach double figures. He also shared the game-high of eight rebounds while adding a pair of assists.

On Saturday, he totaled 13 points and seven rebounds, helping the NAIA Division II No. 5 Warriors (20-4, 12-2 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) upset top-ranked Cornerstone 74-67 in overtime.

Schwieterman averages 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Warriors.

Anne Vormohr

Jay County – 2016

Scored for the Ball State University women’s swim team in a pair of losses recently.

Vormohr was runner-up in a pair of events Saturday in a 160-135 defeat to Indiana State. She was second in the 100-yard backstroke and 200 backstroke. She also swam the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay that was runner-up, and handled the freestyle leg of the second-place 400 medley relay.

On Friday during a 168-116 loss at Eastern Michigan, her best performance was a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle.

Bader was second in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events against Indiana State.

Against Eastern Michigan, the cousins helped the 400 freestyle relay win with a time of 3 minutes, 43.09 seconds. Bader had the first leg while Vormohr was the anchor.



Sawyer Miller

South Adams – 2015

Finished sixth for the Indiana Tech wrestling team at the Missouri Valley Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The junior, who is ranked No. 2 at 125 pounds, earned a 15-0 tech fall over Bacone College’s Arnol Baltodano in the second round after receiving a bye. He then pinned Lindenwood-Bellville’s Carmeron Diep to reach the quarterfinal, where he earned a 10-2 major decision over Grand View’s Justin Portillo.

In the semifinal, Miller lost to No. 8 Jacob Seto of Missouri Valley by a 6-5 decision before getting pinned by No. 3 Matthew Nguyen of Grand View in the consolation semifinal.

Miller dropped his fifth-place match to No. 11 Koby Milner of Reinhardt by a 13-12 decision. He’s now 20-9 on the year.



Ashton Klopp

South Adams – 2017

Helped the nationally-ranked University of Findlay women’s swim team to a pair of victories Friday and Saturday.

The freshman won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2 minutes, 12.81 seconds, Saturday in a 166-92 victory over Bellarmine. She was also second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley while swimming the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay that was third.

Friday she was fourth in the 100 butterfly, was part of the runner-up 400 freestyle relay and the third-place 200 medley relay as the NCAA Division II No. 25 Oilers beat Wayne State 120-104.

Jay County – 2016

Played for the University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team as it pushed its winning streak to 20 consecutive games.

She had four points, one rebound, an assist and a steal Tuesday in a 74-64 win over Asbury. Two days earlier she scored six points with two rebounds and an assist in a 78-71 victory against Alice Lloyd.

On Jan. 18, the sophomore had six points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals as the NAIA Division II No. 3 Red Storm (22-1, 10-0 River States Conference) beat Midway 95-67.

Jay County – 2015

Broke out of a little slump Tuesday for the Brescia University women’s basketball team in a 66-60 loss to IU-East.

She was 6-for-11 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, as she scored 15 points to finish second on the team. She also had four steals, three assists and a rebound.

The junior tallied three points, a rebound and an assist in a 77-69 loss Sunday to Point Park, a day after recording seven points, six rebounds and three steals as the Bearcats (8-14, 4-6 River States Conference) lost to Carlow on Saturday, 54-43.

Fort Recovery – 2014

Reached double figures for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team on Saturday in an 86-73 victory over Ohio Valley.

The senior was 7-of-11 from the field including 4-of-7 from long range to finish second on the team with 18 points. He also had one offensive rebound and an assist for the NCAA Division II No. 13 Oilers (18-2, 12-0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference), who have won 14 consecutive games.



Cady Farlow

South Adams – 2015

Competed for the Purdue University women’s swim team Saturday in a 176-123 loss to Indiana.

She was third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 3.37 seconds, and fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.98. Olympic gold medalist Lilly King of Indiana was first in both.

Farlow also swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley B relay that finished third.
